this #monktoberfest talk about the web and “view source” and people using Processing/p5.js to teach coding…boy is it landing with me very fond memories of working with @humphd.bsky.social on the precursors of that. having no idea what we were doing but it being so clear that we needed to do it

I have my bones to pick with Shoppers Drug Mart as a store and economic phenomenon, but I will say that their app-and-SMS prescription management system is very welcome. it definitely contributes meaningfully to my success at the task of staying appropriately medicated.

redacted screenshot of an SMS conversation with a pharmacy bot:

bot: “SDM: No refills left for Rx starting with ABCD at 2 XXXXXX ST. W. To request a new prescription (renewal), reply RENEW.”

human: “RENEW”

bot: “Renewal request submitted for Rx starting with ABCD Status update will be sent within approx. 3 days. If you only have a few days of med supply left, call us at 416-999-9999”

for me, a key part of getting up to speed as a new leader is meeting 1:1 each person in my new org. this takes a fair bit of time: about 50 hours at @tailscale.com, many thanks to my intrepid EA for the calendar heroics! it's worth it, though, for a few reasons: 🧵

I’ve been talking about Alysa Liu’s story about her quitting skating only to come back and become even better because she did it for herself and this came to me in a dream…

A meme of Alysa Liu based on Da Share Zone reading:

JUST WALK OUT
work social thing movies home class dentist
figure skating
too fancy weed store cops it your quick friend ships
IF IT SUCKS... HIT DA BRICKS!!!
Real winners quit
You can leave!!

Every developer who implements a window where the options are “maybe later” or “yes” should be thrown in a gulag forever.

@tef.bsky.social is 100% right here. if it breaks in CI it needs to break on the developer’s machine, and as early as possible. on-save for linters is good. post-push-after-waiting-for-CI-to-set-up is bad. be good, not bad

In 1968, 13-year-old Mary Beth Tinker was suspended from school for wearing a black armband to protest the Vietnam War. We took her case all the way to the Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of Mary Beth and students’ right to free speech 56 years ago today.

A black and white photo of a young Mary Beth Tinker in a sweater with a black armband on sitting next to her mother in a dark dress who is writing in a notebook. Other people can be seen sitting next to and behind them.
