Something that has troubled me over and over in these AI years is how we seem to need to redraw every line to accommodate AI. It is possible for writing to have value for thinking and for oral exams and discussions to have value. We don't need to remake the world to eliminate writing/5

Please consider not saying that some AI models or some statistical models are good, useful, beneficial, whatever else positive, in science if it's not your research area. It's ok not to know things. It's ok not to both side things. It's ok to ask colleagues who are experts.

Maybe people who desperately want machines to be better than humans have the feeling that they are just not really good at being human? But none of us are. So it’s really a problem of having to deal with humanity‘s fallibility and our own split subjectivity. No machine will fix that - which is good💔

AI is alarming for many reasons: it's a dangerous financial bubble, an environmental catastrophe, and a tool for eroding wages and labor power. But in addition to all that, AI is an epistemic disaster. 1/

Leaning against the rightmost mountains is a sneering, princely toff in a red frock coat, holding a cane that has penetrated the decapitated skull and lodged in the brains.

Meanwhile, on the 'inner thoughts' issue, even Anthropic researchers themselves say reasoning-shaped bits of synthetic text are "systematically unfaithful". Scientists would do well to avoid the anthropomorphisation that serves only corporate interests More here: doi.org/10.5281/zeno...
This is where all too easily, description turns into ascription: describing the output of some process as ‘reasoning’ invites the inference that reasoning is indeed going on, and soon enough assumed capabilities like judgement and credibility come along for the ride.
Research that looks behind the curtains of benchmark results finds something quite different. One study by Anthropic researchers found that chain-of-thought traces often “systematically misrepresent the true reason for a model’s prediction” and identified a range of biasing features that made explanation-shaped model output “plausible yet systematically unfaithful ” (Turpin et al. 2023, emphasis theirs) . A nother study found that large language models, even if they deliver plausible output,“often arrive at correct answers through incorrect reasoning” (Nguyen et al. 2024).

On deskilling, we always knew; it's the AI hypers who want us to forget: "This experience has demonstrated that it is impossible to create an absolutely reliable automatic system, and sooner or later people face the necessity to act after equipment fails." — Valentina Ponomareva
Valentina sitting at her deskThe Human Factor in Space Exploration: Soviet and American Approaches
by Valentina Ponomareva

in Vladimir Orel, ed., Institut istorii estestvoznaniia i tekhinki. Godichnaia nauchnaia konferentsiia, 1998 [Proceedings of the 1998 annual conference of the Institute for the History of Natural Science and Technology], Moscow, pp. 614-18.

Translated from the Russian by Slava GerovitchThis experience has demonstrated that it is impossible to create an absolutely reliable automatic system, and sooner or later people face the necessity to act after equipment fails. The cosmonaut must be constantly prepared to take up the functions of the failed system. But if his functions are limited to monitoring and observation only, then he is effectively excluded from the control process. To be able to join in the control process, he must have strong manual control skills based not only on his experience with ground tests, but also on his performance of control functions in real flight conditions. If the cosmonaut loses such skills because of his passive role, the probability of his choosing and carrying out the right procedure in an emergency would be small. This contradiction is inherent in automatic control systems.
