Finally finished @philipcball.bsky.social's wonderful "How Life Works"! When I hit the part on the 2nd Law felt compelled to share my comic on Entropy from a few years back, bits of which I'm expanding on in the new work (& one reason I read this brilliant book!) spinweaveandcut.com/sketching-en...
a single page comic about entropy - how everything tends towards disorder, and those brief moments when things go against that downward flow - specifically life. Opens with linear rod of small rectangular panels on how things get more disordered.

The rest of the page has a much less regimented structure. In the background is a river in black that flows from upper left to lower right end of page. Over it is a spiraling panel structure that has the primary narrative. This begins with a trio of narrow rectangular small vertical panels arranged in descending order. Within them a sequence where a ball falls down stairs. A white arrow stems from the panels and points into the Y of the word yet In large black letters. This moves reading flow across the page to the right side where there are three mirroring vertical panels to the left side except these are arranged in ascending order left to right. Inside them are images of swirls - perhaps a cyclone viewed from space. And then, on the right edge, the panels align with the arm of a spiral of panels. And now we see a sequence depicting swirl of gases to birth of a star, a diagram of new elements forged in its core to star and planet (earth) orbiting. Then swirls of clouds on earth, lightning, rain, water, volcanoes and spiraling to the center: circular panel with caption “swirls keep forming”. Now spiral path reverses from the center to show organic molecules, then dna. Outside the panel path a maple “helicopter” spirals into the panels, to sprout and grow into a tree

This second spiral arm comes out of the center and returns to standard reading order. A river has flowed behind the whole page and in the last panel, a person is seen putting a finger in creating swirls in the water - as life and stars are swirls drawing from entropy's downward stream...

The middle of the slide shows a yellow box with text:
From the 2001 Nobel Lecture by Leland Hartwell:
“My research career has been motivated by a desire to understand cancer. Each time I have identified an intriguing aspect of the cancer problem, I have found that it could be approached more effectively in the simpler eukaryotic cell Saccharomyces cerevisiae, than the human cell. Each time the yeast cell has revealed some of its secrets.”

Man wearing white short sleeve shirt with some blue horizontal stripes is standing at a podium to the right of a giant slide about that is titled: We identified genetic interactors through Reporter Synthetic Genetic Array. On the slide, below the title is a black horizontal line. On the left half of the line, there is a red rectangle labeled RFP. On the right half of the line is a yellow rectangle labeled YFP. There is the word “Repressed” positioned above and between the two rectangles, and there is an inhibitory line that points from “Repressed” to the horizontal line between the two colored rectangles. To the right of the horizontal line and the yellow YFP rectangle is a representation of a budding yeast cell (a large circle with a small circle positioned at about 4 o’clock of the large circle, outside of the large circle, but touching the edge of the large circle) that is filled in with the color red. Below the horizontal line is an arrow pointing to a grey rectangle that is a photograph with an ordered array of spots that appear to be different colors. A small 4 x 4 patch of the spots has been zoomed in and sits above the top right of grey rectangle and shows some spots are yellow and some are red. On the bottom right half of the slide is visible the image of a man’s face (a collaborator).
