This week on #RunawaytotheStars: Imagine an 80km rollercoaster ascent, then a cable descends from the sky and yoinks you off the rails. Catch up: runawaytothestars.com Read ahead: patreon.com/jayrockin
A fleet of vehicles depart from the glowing airlock chamber of the recycling plant and head towards the Runaway, which is stationed on the rails outside with a towering delicate-materials hitch attached to the jack sled it sits on, and a construction elevator positioned outside its docking ring. A suited Talita is shown handing off pressurized canisters of luggage from the construction elevator to Gillie and Idrisah, who are standing inside the airlock of the Runaway. Inside the airlock, the sweaty trio take off their helmets and enjoy the cool air blasting from the air pumps. Gillie's hair and Talita's mane are rumpled and wet and flattened from being in the helmets. Talita stretches her arm and jaw as Idrisah signs thanks to her for doing so much heavy lifting. On the wall panel displays, Bip waves to them and prints the word "WELCOME!" The lifting isn't done yet, though, as the trio pack their belongings into the cargo bay. Luggage is held to the floor, walls, and ceiling with thick adjustable straps, then covered with netting. Talita brings in cargo while Gillie and Idrisah tighten straps. Finally, the three follow Bip's directions into a room of the third floor. They point down from the third floor ceiling and print the words "LAUNCH BEDS." They carefully climb down the ladder through the door of the sideways room.Gillie, Idrisah, and Talita all lie down in cushioned launch beds that are positioned flat against the interior outer wall of the ship, and buckle their seatbelts. Bip's icon lounges on the wall next to them, as if also lying down. The floor of the room (currently a vertical wall at their feet) displays a countdown of 25 minutes and 32 seconds.   The launch procedure begins, described in steps: 1. Dispatches on ground rail: the sled with the Runaway travels away from the recycling plant along the outside of the berm wall. 2. Transfers to access rail: the sled switches rails onto a path that takes it around the far edge of the berm, and into the interior loop. 3. Merges onto loop rail: the sled switches tracks onto the looped end of the launch highway. 4. Passes through magnetic bearing housing: the sled rounds the loop track along the inside of the berm and passes through one of the trapezoidal buildings powering the rotors of the launch loop. 5. Approaches loop ascent: the sled heads out straight towards the climb. 6. Ascends launch loop: the sled climbs the 80 km tall rail, the ground beneath it falling away to an inky black sky with stars. Direct message log: Calcery: Hey Talita, I hope you're doing well. The sled accelerates to match velocity with the skyhook. Dirtball's surface is 80km below the Runaway from where it rides on the maglev rail, soon to be further. 7. Skyhook baskets lock on the target: the three basket ends descend from above, their RCS flaring to move them into position 8. Baskets grapple hitch: the baskets tighten and lock onto the 3 hitch hooks on the support structure 9. Sled disengages launch loop rail: the sled is pulled upwards off the launch loop rails by the long cable of the skyhook. Inside the habitat module, the transition from mild lateral acceleration to stronger centrifugal acceleration is felt, pressing the passengers flat on their backs against the wall. Talita grimaces in discomfort. Idrisah grimaces in resigned anxiety. Gillie grins in delight. Bip flattens their avatar and has it grip the wall and bug out its eyes in perspective, as if it to is being squished by the centrifugal force. Direct message log: Calcery: Sorry it took me so long to message you. Calcery: We had connectivity issues with the galactic internet for a while after setting my servers back up.

"I belong to a cult. Someone did some research that undermines the core tenets of my cult and came up with a catchy phrase that makes it harder to recruit more people to my cult. This makes me sad."
Screencap of tweet on X from @jackclarkSF (Jack Clark):

"stochastic parrot" was a mimetically-fit cognitive virus that spread from 2021-2025; it temporarily blinded many gifted people to the nature of AI progress, burning up crucial years in which they could have helped think through the response to the situation.

they COULD design their app to make it actually serve the customer, with an easy “reorder” button that would duplicate the order exactly without error it would be: 1. utterly reliable 2. faster 3. cheaper so much “ai” is a sloppy patch for learned helplessness at the corporate level

On the math research end, we get lots of claims of breakthroughts from companies running closed models and not disclosing all of the inputs into those breakthroughs, because they are incentivized to make it look like their system ("the AI") did it all on its own. >>

more software can be good. but only when it's given the position it deserves: subservient to the customer. almost no business does this any more. they treat software as the boss, to be served by the customer.
december 2019 tweet from me:

software shouldn't demand. software should empower.
that's why i specifically designed it so you can track time in @nokotime with as little detail as you want. just time? fine. you can add the project later. if you like.

Those who think AI is going to largely automate white collar jobs in the next couple of years don’t understand the nature of work - @sarahoconnorft.ft.com nails it www.ft.com/content/4aad...
It is not obvious that AI agents could eliminate the need for this type of work, since it involves persuasion, contestation and the exchange of tacit knowledge and experience that is spread across different departments, and often exists inside people's heads rather than in a neatly codified handbook on the intranet.

If a "climate tech" company is pivoting to servicing the needs of a generative AI industry that specifically hungers for fossil fuels, how on Earth is that still "climate tech"? That is petrotech - and we should call it that, when it is that. techcrunch.com/2026/09/28/t...
The pivot has helped many climate tech startups land fresh funding from investors. Total venture deal value has risen for four consecutive quarters, cresting the $14 billion-mark in the first quarter of this year, according to the most recent available data from PitchBook. It’s the best fundraising environment for climate tech in the last few years, with most of the deal value driven by sectors boosted by data center construction, including the built environment, grid infrastructure, and dispatchable energy that can be turned on or off when it’s needed.

Ultimately, the undercurrent at New York Climate Week was that the data center party won’t last forever, but it might last long enough to help startups build durable businesses. Once that happens, they can refocus on the carbon-cutting mission they were founded to pursue.

We have this whole thing with being „data-driven“, but I feel like a lot of data-driven doesn’t actually change anything, because data is about the most *dangerous* thing of „measured anything“ you can have.

There is a truism in campus sexual violence advocacy that schools can violate students’ rights because they can reset the movement every four years. On the flip side of that, there is also a new cohort of students every four year who still believe rape is wrong and expect better of their schools.

And that brings us to present day. The most reliable way for a campus sexual assault story to make it into a newspaper is for the survivor to file a lawsuit against their school. And the two main vehicles survivors used to do that have been closed for years.

There was also a sense that Trump losing re-election would fix everything. But Biden dragged his feet on undoing the damage of Title IX. And then HE lost re-election and his Title IX regulation was vacated before it ever really went into effect.

Trump rescinded prior guidance on Title IX during his first year in office, then put out a new regulation that experts warned would retraumatize survivors and offer perpetrators impunity. It literally had provisions designed to allow confessed perpetrators to get away with rape.

The main reason you haven’t heard about campus sexual violence in a few years is because Trump and SCOTUS have made it much, much harder for survivors to come forward. You might vaguely remember that Title IX was a big battleground in his first term. And that we lost.

The article’s point, this really highlights the situation. If nobody involved in the production or use of software bothers to care about the harms and body count of software, literally any shitty technical practice or lack of accountability is on the table. It’s a race to the bottom of the abyss.
The tragedy of software engineering today is that we are actively engineering systems where neither the user nor the builder seems to have any interest in checking whether or not there's a body behind the door.
