Fascism For First Time Founders
Over the last year or so I've seen a disturbing tendency in tech/startup/VC worlds to buy into the neoreactionary view that for startups to be successful they need to get on board the Trump train. Yes, there are the big name folks who everyone knows about and who didn't really surprise anyone—Peter Thiel, Marc Andreessen, David Sacks, Elon Musk (pre-fallout)—but the more troubling trend has been watching younger entrepreneurs and VCs listen to their podcasts, read their posts and books, and slowly nod along to the idea that democracy is holding back innovation.

Interested media should RSVP to media @ ufw . org. Ahead of his press availability, George Retes issues the following statement:
"My name is George Retes. I’m a 25-year-old U.S. Army veteran, a U.S. citizen, and I work as a security guard at Glass House Farms in Camarillo, California.

On July 10th, I was wrongfully detained by ICE agents while simply trying to report to work. I was pepper-sprayed, tear-gassed, had my car window smashed, and was dragged out of my vehicle at gunpoint — all while I was nonviolent, and doing nothing wrong.

I clearly identified myself as a U.S. citizen and an employee of the farm, yet federal agents ignored me, yelled conflicting orders, and then violently detained me. I was held in custody for three days without any charges, without a phone call, and without access to legal help. I was never told why I was arrested. I never received care to clean myself despite being covered in tear gas and OC spray for days.

This is not how any person should be treated — especially not a veteran who served this country with honor. I didn’t break any law. I was just trying to go to work.

What happened to me wasn’t just a mistake — it was a violation of my civil rights. It was excessive force. And it was a failure of justice. I’m speaking out not just for myself, but for every citizen who could’ve ended up in my place that day.

I’m calling for a full investigation into the actions of ICE and other agencies involved in this operation. I want the agents who ignored protocol and used force against me to be held accountable. And I want the public to know the truth: this raid didn’t just target immigrants. It hurt Americans too.

I will not stay silent. I served this country, and now I’m demanding it do right by me."

Instead of sanctions against Russia? Halting aid to Ukraine. The U.S. has halted shipments of certain air defense missiles and precision-guided munitions to Ukraine, Politico reports. The decision was made in early June but is taking effect now. The reason: so-called depletion of U.S. stockpiles.

It isn’t. When nuclear powers show they don’t care for collective security and instead become even more predatory, smaller states will have to obtain physics-based security guarantees. International law has given every country a voice, but only applied physics makes them equal.

A lesson from history: Tojo and Imperial Japan’s Supreme War Council felt that confronting an external threat was easier than addressing domestic and economic challenges, and with few checks and balances remaining, sent the nation to war without confronting the precariousness of their position.
From Ian Toll’s Pacific Crucible, War at Sea in the Pacific 1941-1942:

By the fall of 1941, no one in Japan could stop the slide, except possibly the emperor, and he had always acquiesced in whatever fragile consensus the ruling circle presented to him. In the end, whatever their doubts and misgivings, no member of the cabinet could find the moral courage to tell the truth and face the consequences. Their recommendation for war was unanimous. Hirohito said, after 1945, "I held the view that being a monarch of a constitutional state, I had to approve the unanimous opinion of the government and the Supreme War Council. If I failed to do so, Tojo would resign and there would be a major coup d'etat, and the completely reckless advocates of war would gain control." Though self-serving, Hirohito's supposition was probably accurate. Tojo hadstated that the army was "straining at the leash," and navy leaders believed that the alternative to a foreign war might be a civil war. The leaders of Japan shared a sense that the coming crisis was an external force, beyond their control, like an earthquake or tsunami. It was happening to Japan. "The arrow has left the bow," the generals and admirals told each other, and the time had come for each to revert to his proper place in the military hierarchy. With a shared sense of relief, the men who ruled Japan turned away from the great issues of foreign policy and bent to the more familiar task of launching a war, as if it were a mission that had been assigned to them and not one they had cho-sen.

These are good points, to which I would add that the modern US approach to war has been to assume that an aggregation of tactical successes will eventually equate to strategic victory This is a poor assumption outside of purely attrition warfare Which is not what we’ve been—or are—doing
