There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

Did that apply to electronically transmitted audio only (like an online meeting), or also to live audio? What if the output available to the user of the system is only a summary, not a verbatim transcript? Lots of interesting potential nuance (which I have no qualification to assess).

Ok, but isn’t wiretapping the act of listening to electronically transmitted audio? This is different.

Presentation said audio isn’t stored at all. Transcription is live (then presumably summarized at some interval). Guessing that isn’t “recording” for purposes of those laws, but someone qualified will have to write an explainer.

Another day, another impeachable offense: The White House ordered federal agencies to block resources to Colorado because it had punished an election denier. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/14/u...
As President Trump fumed late last year over Colorado's imprisonment of Tina Peters, a convicted election denier, a White House special assistant organized an urgent "brainstorm call."
The goal, outlined in an email sent to officials at five federal agencies, was to "prioritize Colorado for the purposes of ensuring grants and federal support are in line with administration priorities," the assistant, Emily Underwood, wrote on Dec.
15.
"Please come prepared to discuss immediate actions that your department or agency can take with respect to Colorado," Ms. Underwood added.
The next day, the Department of Transportation and the Department of Energy, whose representatives were invited to the brainstorm, announced they were canceling hundreds of millions of dollars in federal grants for Colorado projects.

Seven key neofascist narratives, translated into rational English:
I postulate seven key neofascist narratives. These are:

1. Only white people can produce and sustain the highest culture ("Western
Civilization").

2. The different racial-cultural nations are necessarily in zero-sum, violent conflict.

3. Violent masculinity is needed to save white nations (and hence civilization).

4. Women are not capable of this. Their role is to breed the race, not lead it.

5. Because our leadership has become feminised and corrupted, white nations have
been contaminated by contact with inferior races.

6. A political purge is required, followed by a society-wide purge of the contaminating
elements.

7. This will restore the white racial-cultural nations to their previous (mythic) glory.

Since there's been a lot of talk this week about candidates having previously said "defund/abolish the police" and them backtracking on it. It's very easy to answer for that without backing down: Some sort of policing are necessary to avoid mob justice, but they don't need to have tanks.
