what I wrote to share at the @hoponboard.bsky.social Seattle Transit Measure kickoff party last night 👇
I was working on these remarks on my way in tonight on the 7 bus and it made me reflect about the choice I made when I first moved back to WA in 2018. Because I can't drive, it was super important for me to live somewhere with reliable transit, and when I started looking at where that was, the 7 bus stood out because of its frequency and reliability and how late it ran. And so that's how we picked where to live.

It's wonderful to live in a city that continues to expand transit access, and I'm excited to stand here today to support the Seattle Transit Measure so that more neighborhoods can have the kind of transit access we have in the Rainier Valley.

Nondrivers, including people like me with disabilities who can't drive, people who can't afford to drive or who are sharing a vehicle with other household members, people too young to drive, aging out do driving, who don't have valid licences and those who choose not to own cars, make up more than a third of our state population. That ratio is even higher here in Seattle.

For nondrivers like us, transit isn't optional — it's the difference between getting to a job, a medical appointment, or the grocery store, and not getting there at all.

We are here tonight to insist that all of us, whether we drive or not, deserve to be able to fully participate in community life.

Let's support the Seattle Transit Measure, and let's not forget about the Pierce measure transit too. Transit is freedom.

“Right now, our transit system is breaking records and delivering real value for our families. I appreciate City Council’s partnership in crafting a package to voters offering a low-cost way to bring people more and better of the cheapest travel option available, public transit. It’s a package that respects people’s hard-earned dollars and brings 100,000 more bus trips to Seattle every year and funds 22,000 free transit passes for low-income households.

3 business leaders would rather spend $140,000 trying to cut bus service in Spokane. That instead could buy 70,000 bus passes on STA. If I had that money, I know what I’d spend it on. Great reporting from @rangemedia.co www.rangemedia.co/the-regions-...

The region’s transit authority is asking voters to renew 2/10ths of 1% sales tax
Meanwhile, some of Spokane’s biggest conservative political donors are pouring funds into a PAC to oppose the transit tax renewal.
