It was so difficult to be a renter with a dog, and one of those difficulties was definitely pet rent. So happy people won't have to suffer through that in Seattle anymore!

Something interesting I learned reporting on this story is just how many advantages landlords have. It’s hard to see the rationale for adding on pet rent
Pet rent is arguably a case of quintuple dipping by landlords. They can already charge both a general security deposit and pet deposit on top of monthly rent to pay for potential damages. They also often write off thousands of dollars in taxable income under the expectation of depreciation due to tenant wear-and-tear (despite the fact that property prices have actually massively increased).

Landlords know how much renters love our pets. They've exploited that love into a revenue stream. Join us Saturday, July 18, 4–6 PM at Cal Anderson Park for Pets Against Pet Rent. Bring your furry, feathered, or scaly friends and help us ban pet rent and junk fees! linktr.ee/StayHousedSt...
Bright, colorful flyer for a free community event titled "Pets Against Pet Rent." Across the top, it reads: "Join the Stay Housed, Stay Healthy Coalition for Pets Against Pet Rent." An illustration of a dog and cat holding signs that say "We're Family" and "No Pet Rent" appears in the upper right.

A large diagonal banner announces the event details: Saturday, July 18, 4–6 PM, at Cal Anderson Park, with the slogan, "My landlord ate my paycheck!" A graphic of a partially eaten paycheck reinforces the theme.

The flyer states: "Let's ban pet rent & other rental junk fees!" and invites attendees to bring their pets for a treat, photo, and strut on the runway. The event is hosted by Harper Bizarre, whose photo appears on the left side of the flyer.

Pink paw prints decorate the design throughout. At the bottom, a QR code invites people to RSVP, learn about the campaign, and email City Council. Small text at the bottom reads: "To keep everyone safe, your pet must be restrained and under your control."
