On the other hand, there is today something that parents can do to make sure that this sort of tragedy does not happen to a child of theirs. They can insist that their child is immunised against measles.

The measles had turned into measles encephalitis and there was nothing the doctors could do. That was in 1962, but even now, if a child with measles happens to develop the same deadly reaction from measles as Olivia did, there would still be nothing the doctors could do.

In 2012 I published a paper that estimated that global measles mortality had dropped from 500k to 139k from 2000 to 2010. Last year, after doing this every year for 12 years, we estimated that measles deaths had further dropped to 107K. Every death due to measles is preventable.

Studies show that funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) contributed to 354 of 356 drugs (99.4%) approved by the FDA from 2010 to 2019. Recklessly slashing NIH funding will mean that patients will be waiting much longer for life-saving treatments.
