Bluesky pals! I have a sci-fi graphic novel called DRIVE, & it's my favorite thing I've ever done! If you need a long, escapist read at the moment the entire thing is free to read, here: drivecomic.com (THIS PAGE: His Father Should've Had the Crown)
PANEL 1: CAYETANO directs his attention to TRES PRIMOS.
CAYE: Are you behind this boy Fernando standing for Emperor? That feels like you three.
TALL PRIMO: It’s not us, Caye. IT’S HIS RIGHT. His father should’ve had the crown.

PANEL 2: CAYE digs deeper on his point, while TALL PRIMO looks at him, surprised.
CAYE: LOTS of should’ves and could’ves in this family! Given. your mother, YOU should’ve been head of Indústriaglobo by now. So let’s not talk about the roads not taken.

PANEL 3: The SQUAT PRIMO responds as CAYE responds, exacerbated.
SQUAT PRIMO: You were closer to his dad than we ever were, and still you—
CAYE: I DID EVERYTHING I COULD! But this curséd family has the knives out every five seconds. I couldn’t watch him every minute of the day.

PANEL 4: Intense closeup on CAYE’s face.
CAYE: I loved that man! But I’ll be dead and buried before I let A CHILD take the throne, when the Vinn and the Continuum and God knows what else is coming for us.

PANEL 5: NANDO looks to his side while CAYE directs his attention to him, pointing at him.
CAYE: I’m sorry to you Fernando. (smaller) For a thousand reasons I’m sorry. But there’s not a chance in hell I’m letting you run this empire.

PANEL 6: NANDO in the background looking a little shell shocked, CAYE dramatically puts his hand against NANDO as he turns and walks away.
CAYE: Let’s get these asinine speeches over with. I’m taking the damn throne. And then I’m dragging us all back from disaster.

Selkies, from my book Seas Of Strangehollow, the third in my Strangehollow world. You can find the books here: buff.ly/7krkipG #selkies #mermaid #merfolk #folklore #fairytales #artbook
Unlike mermaids, which you will also find in both western and southern
seas, selkies prefer the cold waters of the kelp forests of the west. There
are no white sandy beaches here, just a coastline dotted with rocks, cliffs
and occasional dark sand beaches. The ocean is deeper here, and where
the kelp forests end there is an underwater cliff edge which gives way to
unfathomable depths. Great beasts loom in the deep, creatures from
stories which chill the blood in your veins.
The selkies of Strangehollow are not shapeshifters like those you may
have read about in old folk tales. They are not dissimilar to mermaids in
that their upper bodies, down to their hips, are...

Image description: two half woman, half seal selkies swim amongst the sea kelp. They have staring white eyes and webbed hands.

We've documented 1 million insect species (~80% of all animal species), with estimates at the true number being 13-25 million. And they all have six legs. WHY? Their arthropod cousins can have 8 (arachnids) or 10 (crustaceans) or 100s to 1000s (myriapods). Let's learn about 'tripod gait'.

Centipede Millipede
Alt: A brown millipede is climbing over new concrete sidewalk, but the lighting is such that it casts a massive shadow, the body magnified many times in the shadow length. The result is that the thousands of tiny legs produce a weird pattern, making it look like its dancing?

The Seed Song
A chipping sparrow is humming to itself while hopping around a forest floor in early spring. New plants are sprouting through fallen years from the year before. Zoom in on the bird in the second panel as it sings "I never had a seed that I didn't like / dry ones hard ones sharp ones even taste alright / if you don't eat them fast, they turn into a grass! / if you let them be, they become a tree!" It stops to munch on some morsels of sparrow food, whatever that is, at the base of a plant that towers over its head. It looks up and up. The final frame is zoomed out to see the top of the plant, which is a trillium. The sparrow cheerily says "Good morning!". And that's how you make a comic!

I love this poem so much. Often I hate concrete poems because the text becomes beholden to the shape, deforming itself to fit that desired image. But from the first lines, that doesn't happen here. The poem swims on the page like it should, like it was always meant to be there.
