2yrs after I finished my MA History at Goldsmiths, my research rights were bought and I was hired to work as historical consultant on this TV show. It's had BAFTA and International Emmy nominations. I got a book deal, too. Goldsmiths: "No point in MA History, let's fire everyone and delete it."

A serious democratic society simply cannot allow this. That's £72 million from just two men. (Both, until lately, based overseas). The average UK earner (full-time) would have to work for over 1,800 years to raise that much. It's a nuclear strike on any pretence at the equality of political power

There are already articles circulating trying to rewrite history and say America was great after 9/11 and united and thoughtful and just a reminder that that period was marked by intense and insanely racist hatred, paranoia, and a frothing desire for unhinged violence and oppression.

The "stop the boats" movement is being driven by the type of English suburban racist who thinks that one black family living in their street is one too many. Yes, it really is as simple as that, and it has been for decades. There is no intellectual depth to this stuff. It is pure, distilled hate.

Find it so miserable how partisan football fans are online. Struggle to appreciate anything about teams other than their own. Of course you're not going to root for rival teams, but the utter refusal to acknowledge when someone's good - do you even like football?

An excellent blog. I’ve had many students who were only diagnosed while at university. It helped them figure out how to navigate the world as they are, instead of trying to force themselves into ways that led to profound harm. The positive effects of such self-knowledge was transformative.

Jfc, I thought we'd left this historically illiterate crap behind us - the historical balance-sheet was a tired culture-war trope ten years ago and now it's being introduced in British schools...🤦🏼‍♂️

much as the murder of Brianna Ghey mysteriously stopped being about the climate of transphobia in the UK and became about teen access to social media, the death of Jason Arday is, equally mysteriously, no longer about racism and is becoming about free speech in academia

Every year, I talk with my students about when you should and shouldn't debate. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, for sure, but no-one is entitled to their own facts. Debating a bad-faith actor who cannot be swayed by facts achieves nothing beyond legitimising their views...

I see Ann Widdecombe has died. When she was Home Secretary I showed her round Drake Hall womens’s prison. There was a pregnant woman on a bed in the early stages of Labour and she asked the prison officers why she wasn’t handcuffed to the bed. That’s the kind of woman she was.

There's an exceptionalist belief that the UK's immune to the worst political extremes. In reality, we were lucky not to get a fascist government in the 1930s. Now that the world's richest man supports our most extreme political party, we need more than luck. We need to get the money out of politics.
