I should’ve added, the main reason ppl think other ppl aren’t hearing it anywhere is because they believe the numbers are being cooked. They don’t believe the charts are legit.

I do think this point is worth engaging with though. That the book can be purchased from the Country Music Hall of Fame is cool too. shop.countrymusichalloffame.org/products/red...
Country music fans recognize this well. We've become so accustomed to hearing the qualifier "I listen to anything but country music" to signal class and taste that it's become a touchstone in sociological studies of music. As Nadine Hubbs wrote in the book Rednecks, Queers, and Country Music, "distance from country music can help to define one as a middle-class individual, which is precisely a matter of distinguishing oneself from the tastes, characteristics, and people of the working-class masses." It's shorthand, often, for liberal politics and a way to separate oneself from anything that could be associated with rural or Southern stereotypes. "I've never heard of 'Choosin' Texas'" is the "I listen to anything but country" of 2026.In Hubbs's view, the popular phrase "I'll listen to anything but country" allows middle-class Americans to declare
inclusive "omnivore" musical tastes with one crucial
exclusion: country, a music linked to low-status whites.
Throughout Rednecks, Queers, and Country Music, Hubbs dissects this gesture, examining how provincial white
working people have emerged since the 1970s as the face of American bigotry, particularly homophobia, with country music their audible emblem. Bringing together the redneck and the queer, Hubbs challenges the
conventional wisdom and historical amnesia that frame
white working folk as a perpetual bigot class.
With a powerful combination of music criticism, cultural critique, and sociological analysis of contemporary class formation, Nadine Hubbs zeroes in on flawed
assumptions about how country music models and mirrors white working-class identities. She particularly shows how dismissive, politically loaded middle-class discourses devalue country's manifestations of working-class culture, politics, and values, and render working-
class acceptance of queerness invisible.
Lucid, important, and thought-provoking, this book is essential reading for students and scholars of American
music, gender and sexuality, class, and pop culture.

It’s true there’s no longer a monoculture when it comes to music. Most ppl aren’t listening to the radio anymore so we are siloed. We could always choose our own music to buy & listen to more but, we previously had more exposure to charting music than we do today.

There are, as always, logical explanations for such a phenomenon. In our algorithm-driven age, it's entirely possible to design a curated world where you never encounter
"Choosin' Texas": You don't engage with country content, you don't listen to country playlists, you don't even remove your earbuds when you enter a coffee shop, should twang be coming out of the speakers.
Gone are the days of the monoculture radio hit. Shared experiences are few and far between.That lack of monoculture is part of the reason why some were reticent to declare
"Choosin' Texas" the song of the summer when it was clear there was no viable competition (in chart terms, at least). We're all living different summers at parallel times, with social media feeding back to us only what we want to hear and see. If you care to live in a silo, rent is free.

The "centrist" think tank Third Way is looking to pay someone between $140,000 and $150,000 to spend their days trying to dig up dirt on DSA members. They're trying to sell this gig as "anti-extremism" work, which I find completely disgusting.
from job listing:

As the Director of Anti-Extremism, a typical day might include…

Assembling and updating a database of the DSA’s most extreme ideas and statements and a repository of voting records, affiliations, and issue positions to make available to allies and partners;
Leading public opinion research to identify and test the contrasts that move base voters away from these extreme candidates;
Overseeing the development of memos, talking points, rapid response materials, and other products that make the case against these extreme forces in American politics;
Promoting and marketing our research and materials to ensure they reach decisionmakers quickly, repeatedly, and at scale through a coordinated distribution infrastructure;
Recruiting and arming a group of young, diverse spokespeople to fight the DSA from a center-left perspective and assembling a broad coalition of organizational partners to make the case against extremism;
Running an earned media program to create a drumbeat of our message in op-eds, television appearances, podcasts, and traditional and digital media engagement.
