Country music fans recognize this well. We've become so accustomed to hearing the qualifier "I listen to anything but country music" to signal class and taste that it's become a touchstone in sociological studies of music. As Nadine Hubbs wrote in the book Rednecks, Queers, and Country Music, "distance from country music can help to define one as a middle-class individual, which is precisely a matter of distinguishing oneself from the tastes, characteristics, and people of the working-class masses." It's shorthand, often, for liberal politics and a way to separate oneself from anything that could be associated with rural or Southern stereotypes. "I've never heard of 'Choosin' Texas'" is the "I listen to anything but country" of 2026.

In Hubbs's view, the popular phrase "I'll listen to anything but country" allows middle-class Americans to declare
inclusive "omnivore" musical tastes with one crucial
exclusion: country, a music linked to low-status whites.

National report shows Ohio preschool enrollment dropped by more than 4,500 kids, even as other states are expanding.
That's not random. Here's why:
Over the past year, Ohio changed how families access early childhood programs. Instead of going straight into preschool, many families are now routed through a childcare (daycare) system first, with new rules that make it harder to combine preschool and childcare support.
Preschools are now closing everywhere. Parents are dealing with more paperwork and more confusion..
And in rural areas, where daycare providers often don't offer transportation, some kids simply don't go at all.
Preschool and daycare are not the same thing. One is built around learning and preparing kids for kindergarten. The other is built around care.
Both are important but they are not interchangeable.
When the system starts steering families away from preschool, fewer kids show up ready to learn on day one. And when that happens, we don't save money, we just pay for it later.
Ohio should be making preschool easier to access, not harder.

Two local rescue dogs, abandoned in Johnson County, now part of a very familiar family!

Here’s how it happened.

The wonderful Rescue DOG & End of Life Sanctuary in Mountain City, TN took in the pair of black lab mixes and were able to get them transported to a Delaware rescue.

Well — they were adopted together by the Biden family!

“As you can see the pup on the right is staying true to Johnson County, TN character and will not sit still for the photo shoot, ready to run and play,” said Melissa Gentry, the founder of RDEOLS. “Are we excited about this adoption? Yes, but we are just as excited when our local folks adopt, like Quint Reece across the street. To us, a great home is a great home! We are thrilled for these two pups who were once abandoned on the mountain. We always tell each one, "make us proud" .. these two sure did. God speed, sweet babies!”

My local public library is ending their mobile hotspot program due to state budget cuts (and unreturned equipment). Coincidentally, google, is building a data center here 🙃 One citizen calls out the irony of local Republicans giving google a massive tax abatement while they also cut funding for

The Scioto County Public
Library will no longer circulate mobile Wi-Fi hotspots as of Monday, February 2, 2026, due to rising costs of the service, a reduction in state funding, and unreturned devices. The increasing cost for hotspot devices and wireless service, along with a significant number of hotspots not being returned, have made it no longer sustainable to continue the lending program, especially faced with a decrease in state funding.

* Internet-accessible computers are available for public use at all SCPL locations, and Wi-Fi is available throughout all the library buildings and parking lots.

* A portion of the remaining hotspot funds will be transferred to our hoopla and Libby accounts, allowing more access and purchase of materials through these digital resources.

The fact that Krasner’s grandparents were Russian Jewish immigrants changes things considerably (for me) too. I think anyone who’s aware of the situation should be able to point out the obvious parallels but, Shapiro’s public issue with Krasner is especially a non starter in this case.

Krasner was born in St. Louis in 1961. His father, William Krasner, was the son of Russian Jewish immigrants and an author of crime fiction, and his mother, Juanita Frazier, was an evangelical Christian minister. Krasner graduated from Conestoga High School in 1979, from the University of Chicago in 1983, and from Stanford Law School in 1987.

I carry a gun for the protection of myself and family in the event that I may need to do so until (wait for it) law enforcement arrives to assist and enforce the laws of this country. When I carry a gun, I understand PERFECTLY that there are inherent risks associated with doing so. Guess what happens in this country if you commit a very minor crime while carrying a firearm??? It's INSTANTLY turned into a felony. Get a DUI while carrying a firearm...FELONY. Why do you think that is??? If you place yourself into a situation where law enforcement is involved, and you're carrying a firearm regardless of the severity of the situation, it INSTANTLY becomes a situation where the use of deadly force becomes an instant decision that isn't subject to frame by frame video replay. PERIOD.
