Today is #WorldOctopusDay 🐙 Did you know that octopuses have blue blood? This graphic looks at what makes it blue, as well as other blood colours seen in different organisms: wp.me/p4aPLT-Fc #ChemSky 🧪
Infographic on the chemistry of the colours of blood. Human blood is red due to haemoglobin, which is also red when deoxygenated - not blue! Spiders, crustaceans, and molluscs including octopuses and squid have blue blood due to haemocyanin, which contains copper instead of iron. When deoxygenated, haemocyanin is colourless. Some segmented worms, some leeches and some marines worms have green blood due to chlorocruorin, which is light green when deoxygenated. Marine worms including peanut worms, penis worms and brachiopods have purple blood due to haemerythrin, which is colourless when deoxygenated.

A fun bit of trivia about today's physics Nobel Prize: Francis Halzen won it for envisioning and leading the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole, but apparently he's never actually been there! WFH FTW. (To be fair, it is rather... remote.)

The stat I remember from Francis Halzen's talk was that you have, on average, one neutrino hit in your body in your lifetime. (Likely based on scaling down a neutrino detector & only counting interactions that would be detected.) When he gave this number, he quipped: "The second one kills you."

I attended a seminar by freshly minted Nobel Laureate Francis Halzen many years ago and something he said stuck with me, but it takes some explaining, so this will be a (short) thread. The talk was about neutrino telescopes, and he started by explaining how rarely neutrinos interact with anything.

If you win the Nobel Prize, you should earn a superhero name. Professor Neutrino is right there for Halzen. Plus he already has his Fortress of Solitude.

Something AI is responsible for that doesn't get enough talk: How, when it scrapes a website to illegally steal everything on it, it uses up a ton of its bandwidth allotment, crashing it or racking up massive fees for site owners.

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

One week today, let's see if I (kinda) go 2 for 2 on #chemnobel...
A screenshot of my Bluesky post about the ChemNobel last year, that reads:

#NobelPrize week starts tomorrow & the #chemnobel is Wednesday… used to be so much Nobel chat on Tw*tter, but that is not replicated here, alas. Anyway, for the record, I think MOFs will win at some point (maybe this year maybe not). Balasubramanian & Klenerman a good bet for next-gen sequencing too
