I was re-reading this old story and I had totally forgotten about this quote. “How long until we start to see right-wing politicians become emboldened to start questioning their opponents’ sex and gender?” Flores said in a text message. Welp. Not long at all, I guess!

If sexual abuse was really considered a terrible thing, the world's richest and most powerful people wouldn't be abusers. The most valued technology wouldn't produce sexual abuse on demand. And allegations of abuse wouldn't be framed as positive depictions of masculinity. Our culture rewards abuse.

Something I worry might be underappreciated by folks in the Bay Area is that ICE operations are severely bottlenecked here by a lack of detention capacity. If we allow this facility to open, we will likely see a massive increase in raids here.

One of the most clarifying passages I've ever read on what "polarization" actually means in the U.S."
Excerpt from the book How Democracies Die.

"America's democratic norms, then, were born in a context of exclusion. As long as the political community was restricted largely to whites, Democrats and Republicans had much in common. Neither party was likely to view the other as an existential threat. The process of racial inclusion that began after World War II and culminated in the 1964 Civil Rights Act and 1965 Voting Rights Act would, at long last, fully democratization the United States. But it would also polarized it, posing the greatest challenge to established forms of mutual tolerating and forbearance since Reconstruction."

People expect you to implicitly trust the results of a legal system that operates in service of racism and misogyny. If this results in blatant corruption at the highest and most visible levels of the system, why would we trust and assume it does right by everyday people

Statement from the entire Minneapolis City Council in support of a General Strike and Day of Truth & Freedom on January 23rd.
"Minnesota is deeply grounded in the values of community, compassion, dignity, and solidarity. The violent actions of federal agents have had profound effects on families and communities across our city and state, creating an environment of chaos, fear, and disruption in our neighborhoods. This federal operation has made life difficult for many residents to shop for groceries, go to work, take their children to school, or keep their small businesses open. When residents are brutalized and profiled, families are torn apart, and children are arrested, our communities are not any safer. We continue to demand that ICE, and all federal agents leave our state immediately. Minnesotans have a long tradition of activism, protest, and civic engagement during significant inflection moments in our state. A broad coalition of labor organizations, faith communities, community-based organizations, students, small businesses, and workers have called for a statewide Day of Truth and Freedom as a time for solidarity, community, mutual aid, and protest. The Minneapolis City Council fully supports this action as a time to exercise your constitutional rights, to express support for our neighbors, and demand the end of this federal occupation. We acknowledge and respect the diverse ways individuals, families, essential workers, students, and businesses may choose to observe this day and support our community.
Together, with our community, the City Council reaffirms our commitment to civic expression, community safety, and our immigrant neighbors. We will continue the work of ensuring justice, freedom, and dignity for all during and beyond this occupation."
