You can tell the press no longer wants to play this game anymore by the way they lit this picture to make him look like Biden

I think that ultimately the problem with uprooting fraternities from American colleges is that the individual chapter houses full of kids are, essentially, mushrooms: the fruiting bodies of a much larger mycelial network of alumni donor money and cultural control. That's what you have to attack

This is seismic news for fisheries scientists. Northern cod is *the* iconic symbol of total fisheries collapse due to overfishing (and other factors) *and* the iconic symbol of a complete failure to recover for decades afterwards. This is like announcing the complete recovery of bison on land.

This is one of the objections I have when people talk about how useful LLMs can be for literature searches or for any kind of search, really. Even beyond the biases that inevitably (and, in some cases, intentionally) show up, part of a good literature search is seeing information *in context.*

obviously a massive scandal for the university and for belgium, but equally a scandal that the president of the united states intervened in academic affairs in europe on behalf of a white supremacist race scientist, though it's likely to be treated as a non-story

the AI-generated pictures of food horrify me to my core, they disgust me at the same level as the smell of rotting meat or vomit or whatever. seeing them makes my day a percentage point worse every time. and they’re everywhere, they’re fucking everywhere

I will always be sad that I didn't see these guys when I was last in London. Even in their previous degraded state it would've been so cool to see. Now they're restored, which is so cool! If the UK ever stops pursuing the annihilation of trans people I'll prioritize seeing them for sure

"Basically imaginary environmental impacts" is pathetic binary thinking. It is objectively less harmful than oil and gas development which is great, but solar farms do often have negative impacts on wildlife. Pronghorn migrations are severely impacted, just off the top of my head

The Luddites loved technology. They owned looms at home and would ‘mod’ them to count threads. Their battle was against worker exploitation. The degradation of their rights, safety and wages. They were against a handful of rich businessmen owning the means of production. Sound familiar?

this is an underrated point - rebuilding the government and Doing Things are going to be important but that is going to be a hard job that takes time and the federal budget is a shitshow the easiest and cheapest way to show voters that you are Doing Things? revenge

This kinda mirrors my thoughts on the matter, and an issue that I do genuinely think is killing us: right now we treat the first person to DO SOMETHING about a problem as the cause of the problem, which disincentivizes actually giving a fuck about anything.

For folks asking why bother commenting because the OMB won't care: comments help build cases for the courts by explicitly laying out harms. That's why it's really important to have your comments be as specific as possible. Also, contact your senators and reps! They actually do care about this.
