So, to sum up, a couple of days ago Christina Koch became the first woman to see Earth in its entirety, and today – right now, in fact – she is the first woman to see the Moon up close, and the first woman to see the far side. 🥹

Hah yes this. Some of the books I loved as a teen have really not held up, while others did and are clearly excellent. But there were books I was also just not ready to read, and my opinions on them were a waste of space.
Text of a social media post.

not-your-lawyer: "was this book bad or was I simply lacking enough life experience to appreciate the narrative when I read it" : an award winning followup

A combination of two alien invasive species, sika deer and rhododendron, are killing this beautiful native forest in Lauragh, Kerry. The trees can't regenerate due to the overgrazing, and as they age and die, only the proliferating rhodo remains. Invasives are a *top* driver of global nature loss.

Still remember one study where they had "AI" look at photos to diagnose cancer and it had like a 98% or 99% accuracy... ...except all the photos of actual tumors had a ruler next to them for scale. And the algorithm just got really good at spotting rulers in a photograph.

Unsolicited writing advice, no: 216: RESEARCH. If you're writing about a time, place, culture, historical figure, profession, etc., it pays to research it properly. That might mean: reading; travelling; going to libraries and museums; consulting archives; talking to people with lived experience.

I think this is probably the best prediction I’ve seen of what’s going to happen. Because “what’s going to happen” is not best understood by science fiction stories but by economics and “what has happened before in similar markets”.
The pace of development has drawn comparisons with the telecoms bubble in the late 1990s, when companies laid more than 80mn miles of fibre optic cables across the US in a drastic overestimate of the demand required. The glut meant costs plummeted and many companies failed.Much of the current spending is on data centres capable of training powerful AI models, but as the technology shifts to inference - running those models - the demand for compute will probably drop and assets may become less valuable. Likewise, if power supplies dry up or Al chip supply chains are delayed, returns on investment may suffer.
"We view cloud services data centre build-outs as fairly robust. We are less confident long-term in the Al training-only locations," said one executive at a large developer.
Another banker involved in the sector added:
"In five years, you're not getting a lease renewal at anywhere near the rates you have now. There is a massive overestimation of terminal values."

Great thread. But imho the main similarity is the gender divide: violent men who fucked up the Earth/ women with a child who believe in another world. And the enslavement of fertile bodies as metaphor of what they did to the Earth.

This is an insane thing to write about game development. www.nytimes.com/2025/07/28/a...

Most experts acknowledge that a takeover by artificial intelligence is coming for the video game industry within the next five years, and executives have already started preparing to restructure their companies in anticipation.
After all, it was one of the first sectors to deploy A.I. programming in the 1980s, with the four ghosts who chase Pac-Man each responding differently to the player's real-time movements.
