The Association for Human Mathematics (AHM) statement on OpenAI’s October 6 release of mathematical documents just dropped! www.ahmath.org/statements
AHM Statement on OpenAI’s October 6 Release of Mathematical Documents

Yesterday, on October 6th, 2026, OpenAI – which is currently defending lawsuits against accusations of illegal plagiarism, copyright infringement, and trademark dilution – released a repository of manuscripts purporting to contain solutions to a number of high-profile problems in mathematics.

Mathematicians did not ask for this work to be done. The Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, from whom OpenAI has claimed to derive its legitimacy, opened their initial advisory statement by saying that frontier AI corporations should not test advanced mathematical problems on internal models. In ignoring the central premise of the Advisory Group’s position, OpenAI has indicated total disregard for the norms of scientific research — norms that guarantee that mathematics remains trustworthy, ethically researched, and in the public interest.

Mathematicians have a particular vision of progress that is informed by history and field-specific considerations. We reject OpenAI's assertion that this release advances our subject, and we urge mathematicians and the public to view the value of this publication model with due skepticism.

Releasing over 700 files at once is not a demonstration of scholarship, but a demonstration of power. We urge mathematicians to discontinue their work with OpenAI and to return to a vision of science that centers human understanding.

The writing, for me, isn't quite Kishkan's usual voice. To some extent, it feels like a story with different audiences than usual, and so she writes from a slightly different position. It's a wonderful read, with characteristically tight prose that flashes out at you, but different! 3/3

In Kishkan's case, she's writing about many years of intrusive, near-obsessive attention from a painter for whom she briefly posed nude in her early 20s (Jack Wilkinson), so some of her discussion may vary from other women's experiences. But I'd argue that this makes it more valuable, not less 2/3

"A physical book is a delivery mechanism for information," it continues.
"Once that information has been extracted and encoded into an Al model, the delivery mechanism has served its purpose. What remains is paper, ink, and binding material. The book is not destroyed. Its value has migrated.
The paper returns to the material cycle; the knowledge enters the intellectual one."

University of British Columbia "excited to announce" that they are dropping support for human note-takers for students who need assistance, and instead going with genAI that hallucinates plausible but incorrect results. techenemy.com/a/3mrrhqx6fi...
So, let us sum up.

We would venture that no one among the student body was actually asking for this. The use of Genio creates a number of obligations that did not exist before for students and for UBC:

Students must have a device capable of running the app.

Students must sign up to the service and hand their personal information to a third party.

Students must be able and ready to switch it on when needed.

Students must learn how to use it, or be taught how to use it.

Students must have an active internet connection in order to use essential features.

Professors and other students must accept that they are being recorded.

Professors must accept that their material may be fed into an LLM and distorted by hallucinations, if the student makes use of the AI features of the app.

UBC must now offer technical support for the app.

In comparison, a human note-taker is just… there. Taking notes. Being adaptable to the student who needs them.
