It's a pouty act of revenge. OpenAI clearly tried to solve every Millennium Problem and every "top ___ unsolved math problems" list, made a lot of genuine progress but couldn't get the brass rings, so they dumped their whole pile on the math community, snarling "you're so smart, you figure it out."

a little louder for the cheap seats in the back
One of the biggest myths is that men rape by mistake. Like, "Oh, they need consent training." But research is very clear: Sexual violence is not a mistake. It is an intentionally made decision by people who know they don't have consent. They just don't prioritize consent over things like status, power, domination, and sexual gratification.
For my research, I got a certificate of confidentiality from the National Institutes of Health, so my notes couldn't be subpoenaed. One of the reasons I call them perpetrators in my work is because every single person I interviewed confessed in that context. The first question I would ask them was, "When you received that email from Title IX that you were under investigation, did you know what it was about?" Every perpetrator I interviewed said "yes." If sexual assault were a miscommunication, you would be wondering, What have I possibly done wrong? That is not the way that any of them reacted because they knew.

I can solve my house’s pest problem by blowing up the entire block it sits on, but nobody thinks that’s a good idea! These guys make me want to tear my hair out and scream, because autoregressive LLM inference is a ridiculous computational architecture for these problems.

I think the main tl;dr is that they've pretty comprehensively demolished any plausible claim that these tools can't do frontier math problems, that these tools are, for better or worse, going to be a major tool going forward in theoretical math fields, and that is going to be a shitshow to sort out 14/15

Ngl not quite sure what to make of these big changes. Only that I am glad I am old now and no longer trying to study or graduate in math or a related theoretical field. Tbd whether this will be positive or negative to those in the long-run, but indisputable that it will be extremely disruptive. 15/15

Look this isn't exactly a brilliant insight, but one of the reasons why some people tuned out new information about what LLMs can do is because people were extolling LLMs in 2023 the exact same way they extoll them today.

No for real. Being asked to test LLMs under the rationale of learn the enemy has been dangerous to students. Do not ask people to use these volatile unstable tools.

New from me in Nature. I discuss the need to look to regulated industries on how to govern AI, and not give into AI companies' self-regulation. Those actually serious about safety and security would start by applying safety critical techniques and legislation first. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Why AI companies can’t be trusted to self-regulate
From aviation to banking, high-risk industries are subject to independent oversight and meaningful penalties. AI companies should be no exception.
