And making this policy without legislation to fund colleges and drive costs down means it's an attempt to prevent people from going to college and majoring in anything this administration doesn't like or thinks is a threat to its power.

If you exchange the ability to read books and perhaps even write them for the ability to ask a machine to tell you about them or to put words in your mouth, you have not made a good trade. You have not traded like for like or worse for better. And that is the exchange being proposed

many of us already had their number from the battles over MOOC. evaluating a technology from a professional background and finding it lacking isn't technophobia, it's professionalism. which is something both the techbro VC and fascists want to destroy, because it is a rival source of authority.

Respect vs. indulgence is an attractive binary for people fed up with seeing conspiratorial thinking in power. I get it. But if you want to change people's minds and behaviors, respecting people *must* also involve acknowledging that they may have reasons for their beliefs and behaviors.

fun part if you ask me: higher ed institutions in secular democracies are the closest approximation of a 'marketplace of ideas' as you are likely to find this side of a global revolution and a lot of people who claim to like that idea do not seem to love its results

Making university faculty sit in their offices from 8 am to 5 pm every day, 5 days a week, is insane and serves no conceivable academic purpose. The fact that admins and even *staff* are exempt from this absurd requirement shows the real goal is to make tenured faculty quit.

We have had this conversation so many times. You do not have to platform/debate obscene views that are also false. I wrote during a wave of pressure on progressives to compromise with far-right haters:
I can comprehend, and do, that lots of people don’t believe climate change is real, but is there some great benefit in me listening, again, to those who refuse to listen to the global community of scientists and see the evidence before our eyes? A lot of why the right doesn’t “understand” climate change is that climate change tells us everything is connected, everything we do has far-reaching repercussions, and we’re responsible for the whole, a message at odds with their idealization of a version of freedom that smells a lot like disconnection and irresponsibility. But also climate denial is the result of fossil fuel companies and the politicians they bought spreading propaganda and lies for profit, and I understand that better than the people who believe it. If half of us believe the earth is flat, we do not make peace by settling on it being halfway between round and flat.

Philosophers often bring up the "principle of charity": a willingness to assume good faith in an interlocutor and treat them accordingly. It's good to do in many circumstances. But it is worth formulating a principle of not being a fucking mark. If not during the rise of fascism, then when? 12/

“We’re a republic, not a democracy” isn’t good faith confusion. The US is clearly both, a democratic republic with elected representatives, and this isn’t hard to understand. As Steven Taylor explains, the phrase has always been an assertion of minority rule, a slogan of slavers and segregationists.
