I served as guest editor for this year’s Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy. The finish line is sweet, 🏁. It’s due out in October. Here are the stories I chose. Congrats to all the authors! 💐 I laughed, was terrified, wept, was delighted, was disturbed…*and* I had one clear favorite, 🤐😊.

St. Kilian Cathedral in Würzburg is an 11th-century Romanesque church & a masterpiece of German architecture. The finest monuments were created by famous sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider. #Photography #MobilePhotography #AlphabetChallenge #WeekIforInside #TravelPhotography #PhotoHour #Architecture
Inside St. Kilian Cathedral, Würzburg

“Würzburg Cathedral (German: Würzburger Dom) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Würzburg in Bavaria, Germany, dedicated to Saint Kilian. It is the seat of the Bishop of Würzburg and has served as the burial place for the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg for hundreds of years. With an overall length of 103 metres, it is the fourth largest Romanesque church building in Germany,[1] and a masterpiece of German architecture from the Salian period. Notable later additions include work by Tilman Riemenschneider and Balthasar Neumann. The cathedral was heavily damaged by British bombs in March 1945 but rebuilt post-World War II.”

NGC 5248 (NIRCam image). Processed by @thocarp.bsky.social www.flickr.com/photos/19746...
his NIRCam image from the James Webb Space Telescope presents a stunning view of the spiral galaxy NGC 5248. The galaxy's prominent central bulge shines with a bright, almost uniform glow, indicative of a dense population of older stars. From this core, intricate spiral arms extend outwards, swirling in a grand design that dominates the frame. These arms are not uniform; they are punctuated by bright, clumpy regions of star formation, marked by a fiery orange glow, contrasting sharply with the darker areas of dust and gas. The overall image reveals the galaxy's majestic structure and the ongoing processes of star birth and evolution, captured in exquisite detail by Webb's powerful infrared vision.

i can’t fix anything that’s going on right now, but i can show you some beauty that’s out there… 🌌✨
Many stars crowd the image, shining in shades of white, blue, and orange, and more closely concentrated at the center.Bright blue stars are in a cluster at the center of the image. They are surrounded by a shell of brownish and burnt orange dust and gas. The shell has ridges that reach towards the stars like teeth. Stars within the dust and gas are hidden from Hubble but visible to Webb in the infrared. A number of more distant galaxies also appear in the background.Ferocious stellar winds, likely from the bright blue star at the top of the image, are blowing through a curtain of dust. The fine dust scatters the starlight at blue wavelengths. Farther down, another bright, super-hot star shines through filaments of obscuring dust, looking like the Sun shining through scattered clouds. A diagonal string of fainter accompanying stars looks reddish because dust is filtering starlight, allowing more of the red light to get through. The bottom of the picture presents a keyhole peek deep into the dark nebula. Hubble captures the reddish glow of ionized hydrogen. It looks like a fireworks finale, with several overlapping events.Fluffy tan-colored nebula clouds, with rust-colored highlights, surround a black central area. Within that area, the focal point of the image is one large yellow star with eight long thin points. To the right of this star is a bright star cluster in an oval shape. The stars within the cluster look like tiny pale blue sparkles. The cluster is more densely packed at its core and scatters outward. Towards the bottom of the image, multiple arms appear to spiral out of a cloudy tan knob. Taken together, the structures resemble a spider or a squid. Other blue and yellow eight-pointed stars, as well as distant galaxies, are dotted throughout the image. Credits: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI, Webb ERO Production Team

High resolution image of a heavy star. 🔭 🧪
The luminous, hot star Wolf-Rayet 124 (WR 124) is prominent at the centre of the James Webb Space Telescope’s composite image combining near-infrared and mid-infrared wavelengths of light. The star displays the characteristic diffraction spikes of Webb’s Near-infrared Camera (NIRCam), caused by the physical structure of the telescope itself. NIRCam effectively balances the brightness of the star with the fainter gas and dust surrounding it, while Webb’s Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) reveals the nebula’s structure.

Background stars and galaxies populate the field of view and peek through the nebula of gas and dust that has been ejected from the ageing massive star. A history of the star’s past episodes of mass loss can be read in the nebula’s structure. Rather than smooth shells, the nebula is formed from random, asymmetric ejections. Bright clumps of gas and dust appear like tadpoles swimming toward the star, their tails streaming out behind them, blown back by the stellar wind.

NEW: 2024 has just been confirmed as the warmest year on record, and the first to breach the 1.5C threshold. We used a ridgeline (Joy Division inspired) chart to visualise daily temperature anomalies since 1940. 2024 clearly stands out with 100% of its days above 1.3C and 75% above 1.5C.
Ridgeline chart showing the distribution of global daily air temperature differences from the pre-industrial reference period (1850-1900), for every year between 1940 and 2024. Each individual year resembles a hill, shaded in a darker shade of red and further to the right for warmer years. The trend is clearly towards warmer years, with 2024 standing out as first year above 1.5C.
