Really odd that we accept that judges can just tell elected officials they're not allowed to levy taxes.

The accounting is in: In Oregon there are 111 data centers. The TOTAL number of people employed at data centers is just 2,630, or 0.1% of the labor force. Those 100 data centers consumer 23% of all electricity used in Oregon. Meanwhile, electricity rates skyrocket as more centers are built.

The other thing to remember amidst all the Steven Pinker discourse is that the book that made him an NPR-darling celebrity academic, The Blank Slate, was essentially an argument that non-evopsych social science is ideologically corrupt and possibly evil.

The Drevlians responded that they would submit to tribute, but that they were afraid she was still intent on avenging her husband. Olga answered that the murder of the messengers sent to Kiev, as well as the events of the feast night, had been enough for her. She then asked them for a small request: "Give me three pigeons ... and three sparrows from each house."[22] The Drevlians rejoiced at the prospect of the siege ending for so small a price, and did as she asked.

Olga then instructed her army to attach a piece of sulphur bound with small pieces of cloth to each bird. At nightfall, Olga told her soldiers to set the pieces aflame and release the birds. They returned to their nests within the city, which subsequently set the city ablaze. As the Primary Chronicle tells it: "There was not a house that was not consumed, and it was impossible to extinguish the flames, because all the houses caught fire at once."[22] As the people fled the burning city, Olga ordered her soldiers to catch them, killing some of them and giving the others as slaves to her followers. She left the remnant to pay tribute.

With recent polls suggesting that many Americans opposed Congress' decision to become involved with the Schiavo case, senate majority whip mitch mcconnell (r-ky) on Sunday defended lawmakers' voting to give Schiavo's parents the authority to ask federal courts to help sustain her life.

"What we simply did was grant the courts an opportunity to review the case, something they do in habeas corpus petitions in death penalty cars all the time," McConnell said on "Fox News Sunday." "The courts took a look at it, decided not to review it."

Like I can't stress enough that this tension is at the heart of everything and if you try and get round it your analysis is going to fall apart. You need wages to live. The people who own everything don't want to pay you. That's it. Everything else is commentary.

Poster for Dr. Bryan Lowe's talk for the Society for the Study of Japanese Religions, entitled "How to Know How Buddhism Spread in Japan, 650-850."
Abstract: In my new book, I argue that between 650 and 850 CE, Japan changed from a land largely without Buddhism to a country where Buddhist ideas, images, and practices were everywhere in what was arguably the most dramatic religious transformation in the country’s history. In this talk, I turn to sources and methods to introduce how we can know that this transformation took place. I introduce archaeological and manuscript evidence that have received virtually no attention in English that, in my view, allow for a radically new understanding of early Japanese religion, politics, and culture. The talk will look under the hood to show how scholars can combine material culture and texts to access forms of Buddhism otherwise lost in the historical record and tell new stories about the past.

It is simply not realistic to insist that your political opponents in a fight over a seventy-year old apartheid/occupation also constantly validate the innocence of your own position, and the "Liberal Zionist" insistence on this is just pathetic. At some point you have to accept your own beliefs.
