I feel like there's a fascinating correlation between people who live in cooler climates loving it and those in warmer climates hating it. (I'm Northern England so the weather didn't bother me - the idea of Hawai'i and the heat and humidity genuinely fills me with dread, but then I've never been!)

Sagan is, to my mind, utterly unparalleled as a communicator that can express the technical aspects of science while also reflecting the beauty and wonder and mystery of it all. Sorely missed, but a great influence on my outlook to this day!

You acknowledge the main issue I have but don't explore it: waste. I'm not convinced that the main driver for people disliking it is opposing pleasure, but agree its demonised. Possibly, IMO, because of a simpler link to it being seen as a young person thing. Hated in the same way TikTok etc is.

You'd have to be quite dim to look at the recent output of Kathleen Stock et al and think that they're centre-left types with some "valid concerns" about gender identity. There's a consistently harsh and reactionary view of human experience which turns people into "problems"
