That $366 million Elon is spending to try and convince voters that Congress should stay Republican? It's more money than McCain's 2008 campaign spent. But it's also, relative to Musk's net worth, the same as a household at the median income spending $32.

The 2026 question: Which is more powerful, money or people?
Elon Musk has spent $366 million this election cycle. Philip Bump examines what that kind of money can buy in American politics.

Under a corrupt or authoritarian leader, wealth concentration incentivises the crazy-rich, with widespread business interests, to make loss-making media acquisition. By currying political favor, they gain rents - whether with enthusiasm (Musk) or more reluctance (Bezos). Here's the economic model.

Really important point i hadn't seen yet, which is that AI data center proposals are concentrated in gas reservoir basins, bypassing federal permitting altogether by avoiding the need for interstate pipelines. All of the smoke about transmission costs reforms look different in this light.

Senate permitting bill would be a gift to data centers and their massive gas buildout - Oil Change International

It’s very simple and it’s been said over and over but I guess it needs saying continuously: if you deem one group too small to have equal rights you are enabling fascism, not fighting it. The people saying Dems are GREAT on trans rights are not paying attention and/or saying stuff like this.
Nichole Hiltz
The Democrats defend the Kennedy Center but not trans people.

Part of why I don't like the AI-or-bust economy is the constant flopsweat of people on the news who say this HAS to work. Quit making everyone so anxious. Goddamn. If this is the next Google then why are you acting like this? I don't remember being told to buy an iPhone at gunpoint.

What would the rate of return have to be for the PE/VC groups? Would it be considered such a distressed “asset” that it doesn’t matter or more of a “Coyote Vs Acme” scenario where they made their money from the tax write off.

More harmfully, it also manifests in blocking federal funding to states that didn’t vote for him. www.ctinsider.com/columnist/ar...

Also? Tech monopolies fund researchers who use LLMs for energy/climate stuff (whether or not LLMs are necessary or particularly helpful for the work) in part to bolster their mostly-vacuous claims that LLMs will solve climate change. PR that helps them build more data centers, avoid regulation, etc.
