@smmt-ukauto.bsky.social have published UK new car registrations in September. BEV market share since April has been above 26% every month. If sales follow a similar trajectory as for previous years last quarter we will see sales 30% and above for the rest of the year.

To this comparison I would add only one allows you to take advantage of variable tariffs, home solar and batteries. Only one completely removes local air pollution - both in the house and neighborhood. Heat pumps are the solution to so many issues and are cheapest to run too.

I've studied solar energy for decades, but I never thought of looking underwater. Perovskite cells can be tuned to the blue-green light that penetrates water, reaching ~34% conversion efficiency at 10 m depth. Potential uses: sensors, cameras and underwater vehicles.

These super high satisfaction figures resonate with my own experience of living with a BEV. Our MG5 is fun to drive, cheap to run and massively reduces pollution getting from A to B. Best car we've ever owned - because it's fully electric.

Life threatening consequences of heat-waves aren't just the acute issues caused by the heat & humidity, they can be due to delayed treatment. Clearly the NHS will need to upgrade hospitals to cope with heat-waves even worse than the ones this Spring & Summer. We also need to reduce emissions fast.

Turns out in India the best pairing with intermittent solar is not coal thermal plants used intermittently but batteries. This is a lesson for those who want to back up Wind and Solar with Nuclear thermal plants. Thermal cycles create stress and fatigue, increasing maintenance and costs.

In 3 years Vietnam has gone from almost no BEV sales to half the market. Maintain this rate of transition and they will have transitioned new car sales to fully BEV by the end of this decade.

@smmt-ukauto.bsky.social have posted their UK new car registration data for August and electrified cars all show big gains with BEVs staying ahead of s-curve that would see BEV with over 50% share before the January 2028.

These X looking transition curves are known logistics curves. Real world data shown here is noisy for a range of reasons such as COVID, supply chain issues, effects of legislation etc. Despite all of these factors we are still seeing a similar story across markets, transition is happening.

Robert Osfield @robertosfield.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
Once lockdowns were lifted and supply chains improved the ICE sales bounced back to nearer production capacity, but BEV sales were already near production capacity even during lockdowns so the market share swung rapidly back to pre-covid levels. The shift to BEV since has been more gradual.

Proposal: the energy transition needs to be sold (to public and politicians) as a package deal. Synergies between renewables, batteries, grid upgrades, heat-pumps, electric vehicles, retrofit, get us to clean, secure energy cheaper, faster and smoother when we embrace the whole package.

I too have noticed AI "assisted" PR/issues. It's not a healthy trend. Understanding the nature of software development issues is hard, but it's an essential step in resolving them completely. Verbose AI babble drowns the signal with noise, it's just makes a hard task more difficult.

Underplaying the cost of climate change and adaptation to it seems endemic.lnin business and institutions. Not only does this leave us woefully unprepared for the consequences but also diminishes the urgency and value of reducing emissions.

"The science is clear, why isn't the journalism?" My take is media isn't functioning as it should. It's all too often functioning more as a mouth piece for the oil and gas industry. Alas politicians, especially on the right, are also pushing the same anti-science, climate change denying lies.
