Europe was hard hit back in 2022 and over winter had little option to just purchasing high cost Gas as it need to keep electricity and heating of buildings working. 4 years on, this crisis is hitting the whole world, cost of renewable alternatives have become far more compelling and practical.

Oil and Gas demand has fallen this year when it was expect to rise. Shortage of supply forcing up prices due to the Iran war is the reason. www.iea.org/reports/oil-... www.iea.org/news/global-... We also have seen greater commitments to transitioning to renewables across the world as a response.

Its a clever deceit, clever enough you haven't seen through it. New UK production produces emissions that would not be made without it. They aren't replacing emissions, they are always adding to it. Our local production doesn't eliminate production elsewhere, it all adds up, it all gets burnt.

The growth in BEV and PHEV registrations meant that overall figures 12.1% up YOY are are now the highest since 2017.

Robert Osfield @robertosfield.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
BEVs with 99,199 registrations are 26,524 higher than September 2026. PHEV with 59,563 registrations are 21,302 higher than last year. HEV and Petrol both shrank modest amounts, but bizarrely Diesel's grew YOY.

@smmt-ukauto.bsky.social have published UK new car registrations in September. BEV market share since April has been above 26% every month. If sales follow a similar trajectory as for previous years last quarter we will see sales 30% and above for the rest of the year.

So how long? Do you know that? And that private funding.. it's governments, banks and investors that fund it. Tax breaks as well. This funding isn't infinite so take away from the pool available for renewables build out.

15 years from now is 2041. Is that how long you are willing to wait for the savoir of new locally extracted Gas production? In a similar time frame the UK Grid has gone from 69% Coal + Gas in 2012 to 26% Gas in 2026. www.mygridgb.co.uk/historicalda...

New Gas production can't be quickly switched on: www.ft.com/content/64e6... "Global Energy Monitor said new projects in 2025 took an average of 15 years to come online, as new oil and gasfields are increasingly found in hard-to-reach areas that can make them challenging and expensive to develop."

Why oil and gasfield timelines are growing
New projects take about three times as long to come online as they did historically, according to a new report

It's literally impossible to replace the whole gas import with locally extracted gas. Go back and re-read the parent post. "wind/solar generation up 14% in 2026 to date 🏭 gas down ~10%" We are transitioning rapidly. Might not be a year but in the order of a decade to complete the job.

Robert Osfield @robertosfield.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
The Fossil fuel industry is selling the lie that we are stuck dependent on Gas. Folks saying that we might as well extract it locally then perpetuate that lie. All in the space of 6 months our household replaced a Gas boiler with a heat-pump, got solar & household battery got a BEV. Can be done.
100
Robert Osfield @robertosfield.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Yet the penny still hasn't dropped has it. If you extract Gas it's burnt, it pollutes. Extracting it locally makes no difference. If you transition off Gas you avoid it from being burnt and its pollution. The quicker we transition off Gas the less we import, the less we burn, the less it costs.
200
Robert Osfield @robertosfield.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
We have to factor in the externalities that the Fossil fuel industry don't pay for. Who pays for the damaged caused by fugitive methane and CO2 emissions associated with extraction and burning of the product??? We do. Humans. Animals. Plants. Just so fossil industry execs get a nice pay day.
100
Robert Osfield @robertosfield.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
It's true that the purchase cost of Gas would be unchanged by the UK extracting a bit more than it already extracts. This is why it won't help UK businesses and consumers who are struggling to pay bills. However, the full cost of extracting and burning Gas goes far beyond purchase cost.
100
Robert Osfield @robertosfield.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
What you are suggesting is a fairytale. If we extract it other countries aren't going to cut there production to compensate. The more we extract the more it gets burnt. It really is that simple.
000
Robert Osfield @robertosfield.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
The more Gas that is extracted the higher the supply and lower the pressure on transition off Gas. More extraction leads to slower transition and more pollution. Those who died in summer's heat waves, wildfires and catastrophic flooding have paid the highest price for our addiction to Fossil fuels
100
Robert Osfield @robertosfield.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Your assumption is based on assumption there are no costs to burnung more Gas. There are. Every bit of Gas extracted results in fugitive methane emissions in all parts of the process. When it's burnt it also produces pollution. If we don't extract it it does no harm, if we does it does harm.
200
Robert Osfield @robertosfield.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
We have infinite capital and man power. We have a finite amount of time to reduce pollution. Every month counts. We are already paying massive penalties in costs and lives due to the climate crisis. Extracting more fossil fuels rather transitioning ASAP is crazy.
100
Robert Osfield @robertosfield.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
We want to invest in areas that benefit the country the most. Local or imported Gas still costs the same to businesses and consumers. It doesn't benefit local businesses and consumers. Investing in replacing Gas dependency creates local jobs, lower pollution and improves health.
110
Robert Osfield @robertosfield.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Any Oil and Gas we do extract gets sold on the open market so the costs to businesses and consumers still gets paid at the price of that commodity, regardless of where it's from. High Oil and Gas costs are is wrecking our economy, we don't fix that by perpetuating that dependency.
010
Robert Osfield @robertosfield.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
It takes decades to develop new Oil and Gas fields, and the UK stocks have been diminishing for many decades. We've almost used it all up so what is left is more difficult and costly to extract - cause we've picked all the low hanging fruit. There's is some great cash cow just waiting there.
200
Robert Osfield @robertosfield.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
In the real world it's cheaper to transition from gas heating to heat-pumps, to transition for ICE vehicles to battery powered ones. The quicker we transition of Gas and Oil the quicker we lower running costs and pollution. Remaining dependent on Gas doesn't reduce costs to business or people.
210
Robert Osfield @robertosfield.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Investing in solar, wind, batteries, heat-pumps, electrification of transport helps the economy, improves national deficit, creates local jobs, lowers local pollution and improves health. So why would it be better to invest in something that we know causes pollution that directly impacts lives?
180
Robert Osfield @robertosfield.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
It would best to not use gas for any source. Home grown solar, wind and hydro beat out gas. In the case solar and wind it's far, far quicker to build out than gas fields are to develop and get into production. Then there's pesky emissions that Gas causes, climate crisis is costing us millions.

It's odd the article pontificates on various reasons why Microsoft might abandon this data centre must misses the elephant in the room. We are currently in an AI bubble with providers loosing masses of money without a profit on the horizon BUT still expanding wildly. Perhaps Microsoft woke up.

To this comparison I would add only one allows you to take advantage of variable tariffs, home solar and batteries. Only one completely removes local air pollution - both in the house and neighborhood. Heat pumps are the solution to so many issues and are cheapest to run too.

Life threatening consequences of heat-waves aren't just the acute issues caused by the heat & humidity, they can be due to delayed treatment. Clearly the NHS will need to upgrade hospitals to cope with heat-waves even worse than the ones this Spring & Summer. We also need to reduce emissions fast.
