TRUNK: stories that took the long way
Available 1 August! TRUNK: stories that took the long way "Not all those who wander are lost," as Tolkien famously said. Sometimes they're just taking the scenic route. Here are 20 great science fiction and fantasy stories that took the long way to success. Each of these stories met with initial rejection before finding a home here. Publishing is a weird alchemy of mood, taste, and happenstance, and it takes tenacity to find just the right combination to let a story shine as it should.

I may not love today's political landscape, the vile parts most of all. But if we have to live through all this, I hope that somewhere, a hundred or so years in the future, there's a kid in history class busting his gut giggling over the President hosting cage fights at the White House.

On the eve of our submission window opening, we felt we should add an AI policy
ABOUT AI:
Anyone who uses AI to write something they submit to us is a loser, and we want nothing to do with them.

Finally giving Voltaire's Candide a try (I've wanted to read it for a while). Not sure exactly what I expected from an 18th century French novella, but evergreen satire woven with Monty Python's plot stylings and South Park's moral caution would have been low on my list.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but cops are not allowed to shoot people just because you didn't do what they said. That is called murder when they do that. Some cops are working hard to convince people otherwise.

Here's a poem by one of the old Chinese scholar bureaucrats that I think captures a certain Vibe very well
Dreams - Su Shi (trans. Arthur Waley)

Families, when a child is born
Want it to be intelligent.
I, through intelligence,
Having wrecked my whole life,
Only hope the baby will prove
Ignorant and stupid.
Then he will crown a tranquil life
By becoming a Cabinet Minister.

Ugh. I wake up with a perfect sentence in mind, then by the time I sit down to write it, I've forgotten the words and can't find any half way so good. It's not the first bit of writing I've lost to poor waking memory, nor the last I expect, but they're all irritating.

In 1890, the X and Y chromosomes were discovered. It was found that the men who were tested had 46 chromosomes, including an X and a Y, while women who were tested also had 46 chromosomes, including 2 X chromosomes. So obviously the conclusion was that the Y chromosome defined masculinity.

The question about AI art/fiction isn't whether it IS art. It's the ethics of massive, wealthy corporate bodies training AI on stolen art, without paying or crediting the artists. All AI art and fiction, right now, is theft. Until that changes, questions about its artistic merit are moot.
