My daughter

That had nested
Between her bicycle handles
For two weeks
She waited
Until it left of its own accord

If you tear down the web I said It will simply know
This isn't a place to call home And you'd get to go biking

She said that's how others Become refugees isn't it?

Black and white film still. we are looking over the shoulder of Jeff Chandler's character Drummy. he is a tall sinewy man wearing striped t-shirt. he is looking down at Joan Crawford as Lynn Markham. Lynn is wearing a nightgown and standing in the middle of a home that looks much more upscale than Drummy looks.
the subtitles give us a couple lines of dialogue
Drummy asks:
"How do you like your coffee?"
Lynn replies:
"ALONE"

"Who Said It Was Simple" by Audre Lorde

There are so many roots to the tree of anger
that sometimes the branches shatter
before they bear.

Sitting in Nedicks
the women rally before they march
discussing the problematic girls
they hire to make them free.
An almost white counterman passes
a waiting brother to serve them first
and the ladies neither notice nor reject
the slighter pleasures of their slavery.
But I who am bound by my mirror
as well as my bed
see causes in colour
as well as sex

and sit here wondering
which me will survive
all these liberations.

Time for another note about the Trump administration’s approach to funding US science. But let me make something clear right up front. When I talk to people about this subject (and that includes some journalists as well) and say what I'm about to at the end of this paragaph I am sometimes met with disbelief. But I mean what I say and I am trying my best to say what I mean: The Trump administration hates academic science funding, full stop. They hate where that money goes, and they hate who it goes to. They want to keep all that money for themselves, to hand out to favored cronies who can help them get elected and to steer yet more money and more power back into their hands.

That’s it. That’s the story. They are naturally not putting it in those words, but instead talking about “gold standard science” and the “reproducibility crisis” and funding “bold inquiry” for “transformational breakthroughs”. This is all bullshit, and it’s important to realize that.

Went to the Milwaukee Public Museum today, as they will be closing at the end of the year to be replaced by a new museum opening March. As such, some of these old Dinosaur displays are getting their last days in before they, like their subject matter, go extinct. Nice to get a last visit in.
Perhaps the museum's most famous animal diorama is the T Rex one, erected during the 1980s. It's rife with old thought and scientific errors, but offered a detailed, if gory look into life at prehistoric Hell Creek. The dinosaurs on display are Tyranosaurus (of course), Triceratops, Dromeosaurus (a Raptor seemingly often overshadowed by its cousins Deinonychus and Velociraptor), and Struthiomimus. There's also a feathered dromeosaur, which was added much more recently (although it looks very out of place).

The level of detail here is extraordinary. There's a balcony that's almost required to be used in order to get in every single detail. For example, the river that can be barely seen in the background is teaming with life. But you can only see it from certain angles. It's an incredible diorama, and hopefully whatever comes next will be just as incredible, if more in line with today's scientific thought. This Stegosaurus will also likely not be making the move to the new museum. It's a fairly antiquated depiction, especially with its low tail and the head and neck area. It's a cool model, although admittedly I always forgot it was even here, being greatly overshadowed by other exhibits. The first dinosaur you see going into the museum proper is this Monolophosaurus, a cast based off of the single specimen that exists in China. I don't know if it will make the move, but the reconstruction is a little dated, especially with the arms and hands. Still, it's a very cool, if obscure species. They even had Monolophosaurus toys in the gift shop! Was always glad Milwaukee had this species on display.

Summer Haibun
Aimee Nezhukumatathil

To everything, there is a season of parrots. Instead of feathers, we searched the sky for meteors on our last night. Salamanders use the stars to find their way home. Who knew they could see that far, fix the tiny beads of their eyes on distant arrangements of lights so as to return to wet and wild nests? Our heads tilt up and up and we are careful to never look at each other. You were born on a day of peaches splitting from so much rain and the slick smell of fresh tar and asphalt pushed over a cracked parking lot. You were strong enough—even as a baby—to clutch a fistful of thistle and the sun himself was proud to light up your teeth when they first swelled and pushed up from your gums. And this is how I will always remember you when we are covered up again: by the pale mica flecks on your shoulders. Some thrown there from your own smile. Some from my own teeth. There are not enough jam jars to can this summer sky at night. I want to spread those little meteors on a hunk of still-warm bread this winter. Any trace left on the knife will make a kitchen sink like that evening air

the cool night before
star showers: so sticky so
warm so full of light

Before and after, 7 days apart. Rescued by a keen-eyed driver, this car-hit Australian Boobook was soon given an assessment, meds and time to rest before release. Want to donate to Mosswood Wildlife? mosswoodwildlife.org.au/donate Source: fb.com/147448698471... #owlsintowels 💛🦉
A Boobook owl is burrito'd in a two-tone towel that's peppery black on the inside and salty white on the out. The tip of a pale grey beak pokes past the fold of the towel, exactly like the OIT logo. The owl's eyes are a brownish yellow-green with a singular tube light reflected in each pupil. One eye is half closed due to swelling from his head injury, but this look could easily be mistaken for glowering... Owls that scowl. With eyes so wide they're practically popping out of their sockets, the same Boobook is once more wrapped in a towel in a clinical setting. This time the cloth is decorated with white stripes and alternating bars of pastel yellow, magenta and cyan, the latter of which is wrapped in a black double helix like it's the Rod of Asclepius. Fitting, given it symbolises health and renewal, and this owl looks both healthy and renewed (and extremely alert).
