The scaly-foot snail (Chrysomallon squamiferum), an Endangered deep-sea mollusc found only around hydrothermal vents in the Indian Ocean. Its shell and scales contain iron sulphides, giving it a natural form of armour. This remarkable adaptation is being studied by scientists for insights that could help develop new materials and technologies.The species is threatened by deep-sea mining, which could damage or destroy the vent habitats on which it depends.
