The thing with helldivers 2 was really funny - they were duplicating most of the game data 4x in the install because they thought it would speed up load times but then it turned out it had no effect when they tested it. They removed that and the install dropped from ~155GB to ~25 GB

The thing about transformers is that they're *general* sequence prediction engines. The notion of a "pure" LLM kinda doesn't make sense and never has. The naming is misleading. Language modeling is a thing it can learn to do, but that's not what it *is*

For what it’s worth, arguing LLMs can’t do addition now is flat earth-level science denialism. Here’s Gemma 4b, a non-reasoning model that could only theoretically memorize binary operations up to 65535 x 65535, oneshotting a eight digit addition and hex conversion *on my phone* with no tool calls

Meteorologists have gotten really good at predicting disruptive events like hurricanes, blizzards, and tornado outbreaks with precision only dreamed of 30 years ago. Hurricane track forecasting has improved so that a four-day forecast now is about as accurate as a one-day forecast was back in 1991.

Thinking about the future, and I'm not a pure doomer. I think the best metaphor is still @greatdismal.bsky.social's jackpot: an extremely multicausal rolling apocalypse over about 30 years, arriving at the same time as something not entirely unlike the singularity. I'd say we're about 10 years in.
