Let's learn a lesson from the nearly 500K of us who mobilized to comment on the OMB rules. We can leave the sidelines, take action and it can make a difference. After 15 months of inaction, our scientific societies finally woke up and mobilized members. It doesn't stop there 1/n

Nocturnal ants navigate using a time-compensated lunar compass
Freas and Cheng show that nocturnal bull ants navigate using a time-compensated lunar compass. Ants predict the moon’s movement by combining linear extrapolation and “speed-step” predictions to generalize the shape of the lunar arc. This compass requires occasional calibration with the terrestrial skyline to resolve prediction errors throughout the night.

FlyBase release FB2026_01 is live! There is news about FlyBase funding. Go to the FlyBase homepage flybase.org for details.
FlyBase Funding Update – March 2026

The NHGRI funding for FlyBase has been restored for US-based FlyBase teams but the foreign subaward that supported the essential curation team at the University of Cambridge UK has been terminated. Therefore, the Cambridge UK team now requests annual contributions from fly labs to support curation of new data into FlyBase and the Alliance of Genome Resources. Without these annual contributions, FlyBase will become frozen in its current state and become progressively less useful.

Please visit the ‘Contribute to FlyBase’ wiki page for details of how to contribute.

I taught Genetics again this year. We need to include discussion of the problematic history of our field, especially as the claims of eugenics are once again centered in our political discourse. Last year I wrote this piece, explaining my reasoning and approach 🧪 1/n www.cell.com/trends/genet...
Trends in
Genetics

We must not ignore
eugenics in our genetics
curriculum
Mark Peifer1,2,*
Eugenics, that promoted planned
breeding to ensure 'racial improve-
ment', was central to the develop-
ment of genetics and led to
horrifying policies. However, eugen-
ics is not dead and continues to
influence science and policy today.
Thus, we should include eugenics
in our undergraduate classes to
remind students that scientists
must speak out when others lie
about science and use it to further
their political views.
