My third novel, HERO COME HOME, officially has a cover! Preorderable from the usual places us.macmillan.com/books/978125...
The cover of my third novel, HERO COME HOME. Four human figures centred, the main image being that of a bearded man looking back over his shoulder (that's Oro, the protagonist), with a circle of symbols behind him. We can see a swan and a key. In the foreground are three people: two women, one with a mysterious marking? scar? who knows!? on her cheek and the other carrying a sword, flanking an older, balding man holding up a pistol. The possibly-scarred woman looks ever so slightly amused, and that is certainly very like her. Everybody else is not happy to be here, or indeed, anywhere

Lundy Bancroft once noted that when abusive men break things in anger, it's never their own possessions, but always their victim's. That tech and AI's policy of "move fast and break things" has never yet included white supremacy, patriarchy, misogyny or other toxic systems therefore feels telling.

#WIPSnips | delay Near the start of Silver in the Ashes, and Sabbat's just brought Archer back from having been shot in the head (after he took apart the Sinnlenst who'd done that to him) ( saranadosfiction.com/2021/07/23/s... )
“Y’alright? Look like you’re about t’keel over.”

*And if you were anyone other than… yourself, that would almost sound like concern.* “I’m fine. I just need a minute, that’s all.”

Sabbat scowled, but didn’t press the issue. After a moment, he jerked his head towards the road and said, gruffly, “Y’comin’? Longer we leave it, more chance of someone else comin’ down and stumblin’ over ’em.”

“Good point.” The mountain roads weren’t exactly well-travelled at this time of night, but if the Sinnlenst had been the vanguard of a larger party – or even if they simply had a friend or two who’d been delayed – then the sooner he and Sabbat dealt with the bodies the better. “Lead on.”

***

The box hadn’t approved.

Didn’t make sense to think of it like that, mind. It was a piece of sodding artifice – magical, aye, but without a mind behind it. It was about as capable of approving or disapproving of his actions as a fucking coatrack.

But still, when he’d taken his knife from his belt, sat down, gritted his teeth and very carefully opened up the vein on the inside of his elbow he’d got the distinct impression that the damn box hadn’t liked it one fucking bit.

*Means it was a good idea, then.*

It’d been a good idea whether the box liked it or not. It’d brought Archer back. But the fact that the thing hadn’t approved was definitely another point in its favour.

From @meresearchuk.bsky.social In the fourth deep-dive of our weekly Symptom Saturday series, we explore debilitating fatigue in ME/CFS – including lived experience, research insights, related diagnostic delays, and management. Read more: www.meresearch.org.uk/fatigue-in-m... #MEcfs #CFS #PwME
FATIGUE IN ME/CFS
Fatigue in ME/CFS is not "just tiredness", it is a debilitating, unrelenting exhaustion that is inadequately relieved by rest and drastically reduces one's capacity to carry out daily activities.
• ME/CFS-related research highlights: • Low heart rate variability linked to higher fatigue levels. • Potential functional/structural brain differences, such as in prefrontal cortex, related to fatigue. • A study showed that whilst the nature of fatigue across different chronic disease cohorts was similar, people with ME/CFS had much higher levels of total fatigue than any of the other groups. Although the studies have limitations, they are a starting point for further research.

#WIPSnips -Blood Price (TaMB 4)- CW: foul language, medical tech Subbed 'pipes' - Zhi learns that the mercenaries keeping her hostage may not be as experienced with the extremes of vampire survival as she would've assumed! The simplistic names are quick-refs from Zhi's perspective.
Blue-eyes muttered under her breath, "She's fucking dead?"
"They starved her to death? Looks like weeks ago."
Zhi immediately killed her expression, not letting her confusion or shock show a second more. Sulaf wasn't moving. Shackled and corpse-like, Zhi wouldn't have blamed a human for mistaking her for long-dead, but other vampires? Didn't they realize she was simply near dormant?
Maybe, if they thought Sulaf was dead, they'd give up? Zhi wasn't going to volunteer anything.
She yelped when the third vampire shoved her shoulder. Glancing back, she locked eyes with the male vampire, his hair short, black, and spiky, his eyes a too-vibrant green. "How long has she been dead!?"
Zhi made a choice. She was going to define Sulaf being in this state as 'dead' so her brain would lie better. Trick herself into the 'truth.' "Months," she hissed back, rubbing her shoulder with bitter temper.
Blue-eyes yanked Zhi to her by the collar, causing another yelp as their eyes locked nose-to-nose.
"Why the fuck do you keep a corpse strung up like this?"
"Contamination concerns. You see the tools we have rigged up. She's a unique specimen. I would've assumed you knew that with how much money had to be dropped to get you in here."
The brunette muttered, "Maybe she's gone dormant? Just needs some blood?"
Green-eyes snarled at her, "Have you ever seen one of us that rotten? They rigged pipes into her body! They drained her to death!"
Blue-eyes growled. "Ugh, stop talking! You," she shoved Zhi toward the airlock gate, "get these doors open. We're taking the body."
