In light of the news about BRS being arrested for his war crimes in Afghanistan, and the sickening attempts from racists to excuse his villainy, this week’s throwback poem is from my third collection, Non-Essential Work.
The Poems I Couldn't Write This Week
The poem about two Afghan boys whose throats were opened by Australian men. The cynical poem about there being no reason. The poem where they still live. The eco poem about the river the cut boys were left in. The enraged poem about the graceless water. The war poem on the devastation of Empire.
The war poem about artists whose taxes paid for the devastation. The family poem about my mother once again not meeting me at the cemetery. The redacted poem using military language like it can be salvaged. The spiritual poem exploding over intended and unintended targets with no effect.
The transactional poem that requires an effect. The bilingual poem that swallows God. The servile that licks the boot of the buyer. The political that invents a moral arc of democracy.
The ancestral that won't let the dead rest. The dark that refuses to kill the poet. The domestic that imagines itself as separate from all the others. The poem that poems. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un. The mistranslated: verily we belong, and
verily
we
return.

Israel must be brittle and weak. If they're trying to make it so it's illegal to criticise and protest a genocidal apartheid state in distant colonies far away, that must mean Israel is extremely vulnerable to the truth. And the establishment is choosing fascism to deal with it.

The most racist, supremacist garbage is being vomited across Australian media right now. Criticising Israel is an unacceptable threat to Jews so speech must be restricted but we have to ensure the restrictions don’t stop us from saying Muslims are terrorists or that brown people shouldn’t migrate.
Similarly, the potential pitfalls of Albanese's proposal to develop a "narrow" federal offence for "serious" racial vilification depend on how these provisions are cast and what kind of speech can be caught in the net.
There must be no possibility of the threshold for prohibited speech stifling legitimate discussion of sensitive but important subjects that touch on matters of race, such as immigration policy or the connection between radical Islam and terrorism. These are the kind of technical questions that the royal commission into antisemitism proposed by former treasurer Josh Frydenberg could usefully explore.

"There is far too much preciousness about wealth and income – and it benefits those who are doing a lot better than they would like you to know." new from @grogsgamut.bsky.social www.theguardian.com/business/gro...
The way we talk about wealth and high incomes is so skewed that, for example, the government’s own advice on superannuation refers to the ASFA line that a “comfortable retirement” involves being able to have:

Top level private health insurance

Fast reliable NBN

A computer and smartphone with good data allowance/streaming services

A reasonable car

Regular leisure activities including club membership, cinema visits and exhibitions

Confidence to use air conditioning in the home and afford all utilities

Occasional restaurant meals

An annual domestic trip to visit family, and

One overseas trip every seven years.

For most, that is not comfortable, that is a dream.

Another Father’s Day in the genocide. 700 days of relentless massacres, bombings, and torture. There has never been a weaker or more evil human population on this earth. We have earned for ourselves that distinction, to have allowed everything we have seen to continue for two goddamn years.
Father's Day in the genocide

People love the poems about my mother,
About mothers, about women and their children.
I know why. Even when my mother wields a blade in a verse,
We remember to ask, who gave her the blade? Who showed her how to swing? How to sharpen Her voice to a point? How to beat the body black? Who redefined for her what is tolerable?
She is no innovator, I tell you.
What of the father behind the father? How far Back in time must you go to land at a kind life or loving
Finale? According to the Prophet, peace be upon him,
Fathers form the middle of your gate to paradise.
Since mine was absent in lite, my gate is not a gate at all
But an arch through which all the winds can travel.
Baba! I still love you, O broken door! Ana Abu Nayirr.
My son, you who changed my name, know this please:
Whenever I should hurt you, I am the only one to blame
And it will fall on me to mourn ever having marred heaven.Father's Day in the genocide (reprise)

My father, the blade, I wield in verse
To redefine what is tolerable,
To sharpen my voice.
Swing, Baba! Change my name
To love, to who I arch for, the body
I paradise. O broken door!
Remember to ask, what is peace
At the point of a blade?
What is a father absent a mother?
What is a people absent love?
What is a son absent a land?
A hurt wind, a marred finale,
A prophet of blame.
