I don’t think I’m ever going to get the appeal of pivoting to video for podcasts. I’ve been listening to podcasts for 20 years, and never once have I thought, my God, I need to SEE these people! I’m on a walk or doing the dishes, I don’t need video.

Made the mistake of checking what kind of earthquake discourse is happening over at Twitter
Twitter user Cam Smith @ripwonr: “An earthquake did not just happen in Melbourne, it’s just windy you libtards. We aren’t on a fault line!! Take your tinfoil hats off and sleep”
Luke Bona @Ducce35 replies: “Wrong, retard”
Cam replies: “Mate we are in Australia, there’s a technotonic in Bali and Japan, explain how we would get an earthquake here?”

Had lunch in Parkville today and was walking home until the rain finally arrived. Its falling straight down, with no wind...this is not normal Melbourne rain. This is tropical rain. Good old Climate Change.

If nothing else AI is making clear that there are people all around us for whom writing, art, and music are not communion with another mind, but just - wallpaper. Just pleasant things to look at. They think AI is conscious because they have no actual grasp of what it is to encounter another mind.

Still Gandalfing against the style "doing a Masters" 1 it's a singular possessive adj ("a 2yr master's [course]", "her master's [degree]") 2 don't cap up unless mentioning a specific field 3 I grudgingly accept some slippage if it obeys 1) & 2) (e.g. "he has a Master of Science" cf. "he is a MSc")

This essay made me ponder the telling slippage in the usages of 'public' & 'private' Public: owned by all, managed by govt by social contract; accessed & shared by all; visible & knowable to all Private: owned & managed by capital; access bought & sold; secret & opaque to anyone who doesn't pay

I'm always struck by 'wicked' for problems whose multivalencies or contradictions resist their resolution Systems scholar C. West Churchman may have coined the term in 1967; he called them 'wicked' for "the mischievous & even evil" way their 'solutions' turned out to be worse than their 'symptoms'
