Misinterpreted “a missing Troughton” as a lost off-spring of Troughton instead of an episode. Which isn’t *that* unlikely given his history

Feel like the Piddington thing is one where people go "how dare it get so much press coverage" - and it hasn't? May be wrong but it's not *that* much, you have to dig reasonably far on BBC News. It's just had a lot of people talk about it, especially on Bluesky where this sort of thing is catnip

I’m so done with a political class whose collective parochialism, NIMBYism and fetishisation of the working class to the point they want to funnel all kids/people at large into a narrow set of options instead of expanding the menu of choices for what they want to do and where they want to live.

This government reminds me of Joe Biden. Biden didn't want to be the prosecute Trump president, he wanted to pass an infrastructure bill. Burnham doesn't want to be the take on the hard right PM, he wants to do social care reform and devo. But you have to do the task you're set or face disaster.

So in one week: 1) Reform get stung for dodgy finances, and the regulators play pass the parcel about enforcement 2) Farage announces plans to largely dismantle independent scrutiny of govt, and barely any press discussion of it 3) Masked thugs blockade a port, with narry a word from senior govt

I wrote today's edition of @theleaduk.bsky.social looking at everything that's happened over the last fortnight in Teesside. Most of my writing over the last couple of years has been straight reporting, but this is a bit of a departure.

The death of seven people in one night has exposed the dark underbelly of life Teessiders have known for years
Extreme child poverty and rampant deprivation, coupled with police funding for a rural area rather than the metropolitan levels of crime being faced have been brought into focus by the A66 death crash

How can the Farage footage matter when the rightful arbiters of truth and justice, 65% of people in the most right wing constituency in the country, have already acquitted him

I’m shocked at how streaming shows simultaneously restate the plot to pad the runtime and help second screeners follow along AND expect you to remember every subplot from a show you watched in a week two or three years ago

I'm predisposed to dislike it, but I'm still shocked at how... second rate the Harry Potter trailer felt? Feels weirdly cheap and the actors are all doing cosplay. Not convinced it won't fall into a gaping chasm between "boarding school mystery for 10 year olds" and "prestige mini-series"

I find it funny that people have said Starmer will have a Ted Heath-style sulk, as Heath spent ~218 times as long on the backbenches as Starmer by my calculations. Gotta respect Heath's commitment to being a hater

The BFI list is a very good starting point though, especially higher up the rankings (even if I'm sceptical as to whether The Third Man should count as a British film!)

I don't *despise* 2001: A Space Odyssey, but when I say it's boring and people act as though I need to play things at 2x with Subway Surfers footage above it to enjoy anything, I kind of do want to despise it

I find it under-discussed that the non-Farage/Binface candidates in Clacton got 9% combined. Admittedly the list of candidates was absurdly long, but that's still quite a lot of people voting for fringe parties and randos

I think the thing we are all in denial about when it comes to the One Cool Trick to win elections forever is that low info swing voters are basically incomprehensible eldritch horrors to politically engaged people. There’s no understanding them and you’ll go mad trying.

Also I still get EHRC and ECHR mixed up every single time. The best case for trans rights might be Kemi gets into power and accidentally bans the EHRC by mistake

Will @ribos1.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
Maddening to see people spin the EHRC guidance as the inevitable result of too much progress on trans rights, instead of being obviously manufactured by an elite which is very happily GC (Well, "maddening" not quite the right word, because so much of it is clearly in bad faith)

"Cheap" Doctor Who is either 90% of all the worst stories in the show's history, or very, VERY happy accidents like The Rescue, The Sontaran Experiment or Turn Left. But they are the extreme exception. Most of the time episodes are not "cheap", just well put together in terms of of resources.

This is IMO a big trap Labour are falling into, reminiscent of the "nasty party" problem the Tories had where individual policies, ones that were unlikely to put off many voters by themselves, combined to make the party just generally off-putting
