Crazy to me that "cope" or "coping" have become insults online. God forbid a person is able to cope. Some of you should learn how to cope tbh.

Maybe a genuinely unpopular opinion, but "love bombing" has gone the way of "gaslighting."

I once saw a post, I wish I had screenshot it, that said that 20 years ago women would say "I'm not a feminist, but" and then say straightforwardly feminist things, whereas now women will say "of course I'm a feminist, but" and say straightforwardly antifeminist things. This is not an improvement.

At this point Scarleteen is intergenerational. We have parents who grew up at Scarleteen sending their kids to Scarleteen! Help us serve the next generation, and stay a safe, supportive landing place for people who are often isolated and scared.

Supporting Scarleteen is a vote for learner-led sex ed from people who don’t treat young people like objects to be lectured at. It’s for a queer- and trans-led, majority-disabled team doing immediate direct services all day every day. I know many of you have benefited from Scarleteen!

Scarleteen’s moderated direct services are there for people experiencing sexual violence, being kicked out of their homes, struggling to access gender-affirming care, navigating toxic family relationships, and more. The site also has a HUGE resource library including some articles from yours truly!

Young people are having an extremely hard time right now and they come to Scarleteen with AI misinformation, pregnancy scares, and terror as the state closes in around them. Sex ed is about caring for the whole person and that’s what Scarleteen excels at. pro.gofundme.com/fundraiser/7...

As long as everyone’s talking about sex stuff, a reminder that I’m fundraising for @scarleteen.com (link in the next post). Scarleteen has been at it with high quality, free, inclusive, joyful sex ed for almost 30 years. They’re one of the few online resources left standing.

Note that in two articles today, WaPo describes a "sale" of bombs to Israel. This is extremely misleading. The reported $2.bn package is 100% funded by US taxpayers via the Foreign Military Financing grants for Israel to buy US weapons.

I promise you do not need to qualify your statement of solidarity with Macklemore by loudly proclaiming that you don’t like his music. If he can be brave and lose touring opportunities for saying Free Palestine, you can be brave and risk people thinking you might have enjoyed Thrift Shop.

I would not say that I am afraid of dogs, I like dogs just fine, but I would describe myself as quite cautious around dogs I don't know. That is to say, if you have your dog off-leash on a busy urban street I WILL cross the street to avoid your dog and I hope you see me do it.

You want to talk about pictures that have rewired my brain? After working on my novella at my laptop all week and not moving my body very much, I finally stretched my back and shoulders and when I experienced how tight they were I thought to myself "oh no, I've been a bad little shrimp this week."
A photo of a shrimp sitting in a computer chair, hunched dramatically over a laptop. Above him is the Google searchbar in which you can see he has typed "why does my back hurt?"

If my boss tried to eat lunch with me as an “equal” I would poison him
reading a historical romance novel and reflecting on the way these stories often present woke nobility for the contemporary reader. a big thing is servants. you can't not have servants in those times but many modern readers think "but I would never have servants. it would be so weird to have servants" and in order to make the protagonists of the story more relatable they are actually friends with the servants. but flip your perspective and think of it from the side of the servants. wouldn't it be so awful if your boss was always trying to be friends with you. a really common thing you'll see is the woke baronet having tea in the kitchen with the servants bc he's not like other baronets. but what if your boss wanted to hang out and talk during your lunch break every day. not so charming when you think about it that way

one of my favorite parts of anna karenina addressed this. as i remember it, a landowner (levin?) basically had a midlife crisis and started working the fields. the farmhands were pretty confused and annoyed at this relatively weak, ineffective guy playacting as a farmhand. he was in the way, had no idea what he was doing, didn't understand their micro culture (esp. things like what they liked to talk about and what they found funny) and most of all, he was...THEIR BOSS.

this is why I get annoyed by people being like "why is the noble heroine in this 19th-century novel lonely? why does she say she's all alone? her maid is there! ugh! so dehumanizing!!!"
she is the maid's BOSS
they are not FRIENDS
the maid probably does not DESIRE her friendship
the servants are not your confidants in this scenario. IRL, the notion of the Loyal Family Retainer was most common in sentimental literature for the employing class (which btw was like upper-working-class on up, although the lower you go, the more work the family would be doing alongside them) and sometimes weaponized by them to try and get extra emotional or physical labor out…

it is still sufficiently not in the public awareness as to permit all sorts of sexual/gender anxiety to be displaced onto various Strangers, for which the only remedy suggested across the political spectrum is "give children less direct access to society, and give more control to their parents"

Two adult men have told me that Obsession was the scariest movie they've ever seen, while two teenage girls have told me it wasn't that scary. This is obviously too small of a sample size to draw sweeping conclusions from, but it's so tempting.

If you read any sociological studies of marriage and families at all, a lot of culture war arguments start to feel less relevant. Like, men who want trad wives are a loud minority, but statistically your odds of marriage increase with how many degrees you have regardless of gender.

Just came up with the concept of "stabbing up," where you believe that what you're doing is "punching up" but either you've hugely overinflated the power differential in your head or the behavior in question is so harmful that no one is really immune from it.
