You do not need to know about lift, drag or thrust coefficients to fly in Ace Combat. You have one button to go fast, one button that makes you go slow, and if you hold both of them together you can make your jet drift. You only need to remember that planes do not like the ground. Avoid the ground.

I keep seeing people asking 'I don't like flight sims, should I try Ace Combat?'. Yes. Because Ace Combat is to jets and modern warfare as Dynasty Warriors is to spears and Chinese history. They're over-the-top action games where you are a metal-clad god of war fighting entire armies & huge bosses

This is a great memorial to a profoundly influential creator. But it leaves out perhaps the most important element in Takahashi's success: the Shonen Jump system, which pairs artists with editors and provides them with realtime reader feedback. This "paper algorithm" can and does shape megahits.

Highly recommend Macross Plus. I've yet to see a game that captures how a variable fighter moves in its entirety. It would basically involve making the most complex character controller in recent memory. One of the reasons I'm investigating/experimenting with such a thing >:3c
