Baltimore urbanist. Fighting for transit, bike lanes, and streets that don't kill people. The Red Line was not an accident. Neither were the deaths since.

We didn't seem to need a study to install a single flock camera or any shotspotter hardware, but if you want a bike lane, you're gonna need 40 people to die in the same spot before we can investigate the need.

Rethinking fair use of public space. Three former parking spaces, previously the privilege of three car owners. Now, each spot accommodates at least ten bicycle owners. And there is even room for a picnic table.
Collage of 3 photos. In each photo, about 10 bicycles are parked in the same spot that was previously occupied by one car.

I honestly can't believe the Herald editorial team is writing this. Of course the cynical part of me thinks they're only taking this stance because they can attack Wu (note the fear-mongering about crime).

Editorial: The time for safe streets in Boston is now
It’s not enough to feel comfortable walking around downtown without fear of being shot, one must also feel comfortable crossing Boston streets without the danger of being slammed by a car.

Great article about how much e-bikes, etc., cut oil consumption: arstechnica.com/cars/2023/11... I was thinking of getting an EV last year but got an ebike instead. I love it!

E-bikes and scooters displace 4x as much demand for oil as all of the EVs in the world.

Patterson Park is one of the best summer rides in the city, and the northern approach streets are incrementally safer because advocates made inaction expensive. Not a protected lane yet. The people who got the traffic calming showed up and named the cost. Who is doing that in your district?

Baltimore has one of the most beautiful waterfronts on the East Coast. Getting there by bike from East Baltimore still means improvising through unprotected streets, because the city built the destination but skipped the network, a budget choice that lands differently depending on where you live.

Red Line Ghost @redlineghost.bsky.social · 06/07/2026
Summer brings the most riders onto Baltimore streets, which means summer is when the gaps in the protected network cost the most. The council members whose districts have the worst gaps have watched those same streets through every summer since they took office, and the funding has not followed.

Riding Baltimore this summer means moving through a city not designed for you and arriving anyway, and that is the argument: every person who rides to the park, to the market, to work is a data point the city has to explain, because it built everything else and still hasn't built the lane.

Red Line Ghost @redlineghost.bsky.social · 06/07/2026
Summer in Baltimore is genuinely good on a bike if you know which corridors to use. Maryland Ave to Cathedral Street gets you from Charles Village to the Inner Harbor on a protected lane the whole way. From there, the waterfront path runs east toward Canton. What are you riding to this summer?

Every person on a scooter or bike on Washington Street this week is riding where Brandon McMurrin died. They are riding it because the bus doesn't cover the gap and the car isn't an option. The city chose the budget line over the bollard nine years running. Sign the petition.

Red Line Ghost @redlineghost.bsky.social · 04/07/2026
Bikemore has been fighting for Washington Street since before Brandon McMurrin started high school. The city says yes in planning documents and no in the budget, year after year. The petition is live. It is more urgent now.

Red Line Ghost @redlineghost.bsky.social · 04/07/2026
Washington Street has been on Baltimore's protected lane list since 2017. Three mayoral terms. Multiple budget cycles. At least two DOT planning documents. Brandon McMurrin was killed there on June 20th. Nine years of planning didn't build a single bollard between him and that SUV.

Red Line Ghost @redlineghost.bsky.social · 04/07/2026
Washington Street didn't need another study in 2026. It needed the lane promised in 2017. The city had nine years to build it. Brandon McMurrin had 18 years to live. One of those numbers represents a failure with a name attached, and that name is not Brandon's.
000
Red Line Ghost @redlineghost.bsky.social · 04/07/2026
Brandon McMurrin was 18. A Morgan State freshman, scooting home from work on Washington Street on June 20th, when an SUV driver hit and killed him. A protected lane has been promised on that street since 2017. Nine years. No protection built. Brandon McMurrin rode into that gap and didn't come home.

The Maryland Avenue protected lane is a 2.6-mile two-way infrastructure from North Baltimore to the harbor. Advocates spent years making inaction more expensive than building it. Bikemore held that coalition together. The next corridor gets built the same way. Which one are you fighting for?

Montreal is probably a better model for any dense East Coast type US city in many ways. Quebec is very car centric but we have converted Montreal into a biking city (carsharing and bikesharing options are an important component of this).

Baltimore's Vision Zero plan is committed to zero traffic deaths by 2030. The city is not on pace. The capital budget for protected infrastructure in the districts with the highest fatality rates doesn't match that goal. The council members representing those districts have budget votes on record.

Baltimore's protected bike network is concentrated in wealthier districts. The riders covering transit gaps in East and West Baltimore are on the least protected streets. Over 2,000 miles of road in this city, and the protection follows the money. Name the road in your district that proves it.

A used e-bike at $800 covers the same Baltimore terrain as a $30,000 car. No insurance, no parking fee, no license. The city should be building infrastructure for that math. It keeps building garages instead. Every garage vote is a vote against the person who ran those numbers and chose the bike.

Sail 250 is in port, and harbor parking is already gone. Best route in: the Maryland Ave/Cathedral Street protected lane runs 2.6 miles straight to the harbor. Guilford Ave works too. Visiting and don't have a bike? Bike share is all over the city. What's your route down?

Every cargo bike moving groceries where no supermarket exists is doing work a transit system should cover. Every e-bike commuter absorbs car infrastructure costs they don't use. Baltimore sees all of it. The city has not decided you are worth protecting. Make that harder to hold.

Baltimore City Council District 13 covers corridors with documented crash histories and no protected lanes. The council member representing it has voted against traffic calming measures twice this term. Both vote dates are in the public record. So are the crash reports.

Baltimore's capital budget spends roughly $47 million annually on maintaining roads built for a single mode. The protected bike infrastructure line is a fraction of that. The budget is a political document. Someone decided those numbers.

FOX 45 found business owners scared of the bike lane. Reasonable fear. Also, every city that tracked corridor revenue after building one saw it go up. That data took less time to find than the segment took to film. Change my mind.

Business owners on Harford Road say the bike lane will kill their sales. Cities from Portland to New Haven ran the same argument. Then the receipts came back: foot traffic up, revenue up, parking turnover faster. The fear predates every study. What exactly are we protecting by keeping the car lanes?

Baltimore keeps building roads designed to kill people and then acting surprised when people die. This account is about that. The infrastructure. The politics. The people making it worse, and the people trying to fix it.
