cowboys were a sort of itinerant warrior class common in meiji-era texas

{Yes this post is already in the thread but it's like a year deep and i wanted it here for context}anintelligentoctopus
I'm gonna be honest 'cowboys were a sort of itinerant warrior class common in meiji-era texas' always annoys me a bit because it's a funny post but also No They Weren't. They were an itinerant *pastoralist* class common in Meiji-era Texas. And indeed the wider western region of post-Risorgimento America

Totally missed that this had been announced but delighted to say I’m one of 12 writers selected for @irishwriterscentre.bsky.social Evolution Programme this year. It’s a bit of a full circle moment for me because I learned about making comics from a course I did with @pauljholden.com there in 2017.

Didn’t think I’d ever get a chance to reuse this
A Fianna Fáil wolf (Charlie Haughey and Dev on the wall) wearing pince nez reads a newspaper and replies to his wife discussing Michael Collins’s wolf slippers:

“I don’t give a shite what was on his slippers, Martha: I will not have that man spoken of in this house”

Delighted to be at Dublin Comic Con this weekend giving away free books on the Wicklow level (2nd floor) on behalf of @dublin2029.bsky.social. Come get a book or two, hear about our plans to bring the World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) back to Dublin in 2029, and maybe sign up to help!
A table groaning with boxes and boxes of books, atop, below, and underneath. Books range from Scalzi to Weber to Weis and Hickman to Maas, and beyond. Please. Please save me from repacking and moving these books again by giving them good new homes!

I don't even know what to say. This is real, this is true, so, like, thank you all, from the bottom of my heart. This took over 25 years to happen so if there's any lesson here it's either "keep at it, who knows" or "many people are divorced"

I do love that AI really needs to be jammed right at the top of my search engine
An image of an AI generated top result on duckduckg saying that independence day is on the 3rd of July 2026, and then further detailing the correct date of celebration as the 4th of July. I was searching for the movie though.

Here's my rendition of your favorite unliving dead, the vampire #Lestat, after the brilliant photograph by Marina Choy -- figured the projected shadow hands would fit a majestic vampire perfectly. Enjoy 🩸 @annerice.amc.com #iwtv
An illustration of Lestat, the vampire, as portrayed by Sam Reid in the current AMC TV series. He's shirtless under the spotlights of a concert stage, somewhat crossing his hands in front of him, most likely to hide from the lights. The shadow of his clawy hands draw a silhouette on his chest. We notice scars all over his chiselled torso. His head is tilted behind one of his shoulders, and his mouth is half-opened. He's looking at the viewer with intense, half-closed eyes. His blond hair is very shiny, almost glowing under the lights.

Sometimes I'll pick up a camera I haven't used in a while and just be completely lost with it. Like why did I set the light balance this way? What was I doing that I needed the focus point to be there? Just a brief glimpse into the bizzare mind of past me. Anyway I ruined some pictures.

When unions and left groups organised cost of living marches, farmers and small buisness owners were nowhere to be seen. They wouldn't be capable of considering solidarity for a fleeting second. Ireland is there for them and them only. Everyone elses role is to work their poverty wages.

Disco Elysium didn't have full voice acting until the final cut. If your game needs voice acting, it should be invested in properly, if it doesn't need voice acting, then you don't need to use AI slop, and if your game might be improved by voice acting, then you can add it in later.

The formatting of this Beckett quote does still represent resilience and determination, just of a very different sort.
A neon light art piece of Samuel Beckett's famous quote "I can't go on. I'll go on" but spaced - it would seem inadvertently- so that it reads "I can't goon. I'll goon".
