Things to say to your optometrist: - Are the best eyes sourced from low lying places or mountainous places? -Why should sight be considered its own sense and not just an extension of smell? - Behold! The Hatman! (make sure to bring him) - Shape my eyes to perfect orbs. - Your teeth hurt.

Painting created c.1970 by GD Cotterell, in the art therapy studio at Netherne hospital, where he was compelled to live. Tormented by a belief, without basis in material reality, that he’d caused an accidental death while driving, much of his work attempted to persuade himself of his innocence
A bold graphical gouache of a coffin against a black background above which a grinning kind green skull floats with pink worms writhing through the eye sockets & flying into the dark from right to left

Woke up with the absolute certainty of the genius of the idea that Chartres tourist office should produce a tshirt with the motto “I CHARTRES-ED”. My brain, instead of processing my life into usable chunks of understanding, is using its downtime for this?

I had this deeply impractical number, worsened by the fact I poured hydrochloric acid into it, resulting in a metallic sludge that was probably carcinogenic. The best days of our lives indeed.

Partner is wearing something with a fragrance like Lynx Africa so against my will my olfactory bulb has dragged me to a time when my pencilcase is borderline unusable because it resembles a 7Up can and zips around the top instead of along the length. The rubber and parer get trapped down the bottom

Years ago, I did a search for books signed by arch hepcat James Ellroy because I realised the inscriptions would be nuts. Here they are. (Reheating this from Twitter as it's been 18 months or so since I've really posted/scrolled on there, I'll probably delete it soon and want these to live on.)

Hard to describe how proud I'd be of the Irish team if they refused to play this match. Probably equal to the disgust I feel towards the FAI and Government for putting them in this position.

It's pure shite that it has come down the players though. The FAI should have backed them, and got them out of the game.

Hoshi-wajo standing wooden statue. 11th century, Japan. The wooden flesh of his forehead and nose splits open like a parting curtain, unveiling the calm, serene face of a Bodhisattva emerging from within the mortal shell. In his right hand, raised in a gentle gesture of instruction
Carved from a single block of timber, a monk standing in solemn monastic robes reveals a miraculous inner metamorphosis through a deep vertical cleft down the center of his head and face. The wooden flesh of his forehead and nose splits open like a parting curtain, unveiling the calm, serene face of a Bodhisattva emerging from within the mortal shell. In his right hand, raised in a gentle gesture of instruction, and his left hand, holding a slender ritual water vase (suibin), the figure exudes a quiet, poised presence. The aged surface of the sculpture is etched with deep vertical wood grain, tool marks, and age-worn fissures that catch dramatic, directional light, capturing the physical tension between the outer human countenance and the divine radiance hidden within.
Dating to 11th-century Heian-period Japan, this extraordinary wooden sculpture depicts Hōshō Wajō (the Chinese monk Baozhi, 418–514 CE), a renowned Buddhist master of the Southern Liang Dynasty celebrated for his eccentric wisdom and miraculous deeds. According to Japanese Buddhist folklore recorded in collections such as the Konjaku Monogatarishū, when Emperor Wu of Liang sent court painters to capture the monk's portrait, Baozhi used his fingers to rend open the skin of his face, revealing the Eleven-Headed Guanyin (Jūichimen Kannon) beneath to demonstrate that true Buddhahood cannot be captured by superficial physical likeness. Sculpted in the ichiboku-zukuri (single-block wood carving) technique, this work represents a pinnacle of Japanese religious monozukuri (artisanal mastery), translating a literary legend of spiritual transfiguration into a startling, physical masterpiece of sacred art.

good rule for life: there is almost no message you can send which is so weird, misjudged or awkward that it would be improved by attempting an exculpatory one an hour later. at that point you just have to sit with what you've done and trust to the will of the Gods.
