I have thought of this specific strip at least once a week during my adult life for situations in both home and work. At this point that is a lot of weeks. I HAD to find it again. I am so glad I could save you some work! Search engines are not what they used to be.

Sharing, with deep appreciation to @randomgeek.bsky.social, who unearthed this Jerry Van Amerongen classic that’s been apparently haunting us both for years and years.
B/W cartoon panel of a woman holding a pan, looking expressionlessly at her male partner who is repeatedly slamming a can of soup against the counter, disgregarding the can opener immediately to his left. He is wearing a buttondown shirt with two pens in the chest pocket, indicating his technical prowess in other areas.

Text reads: Cohabitation Axiom No. 6: The less it appears you know how to do, the less you’ll have to do.

The image is of a four panel comic.
The first panel shows Sarah, the protagonist, working at a desk. A brain next to her says, "We need to take breaks!"
The second panel zooms in on Sarah's face. She is annoyed. She says, "What if I don't listen to you?"
The third panel shows the brain smiling.
The fourth panel shows the brain reaching towards a lever. The brain says, "I'LL MAKE YOU."

I got into volunteering when I had money because of analysis paralysis ADHD version of effective altruism. How can I know how my money gets used and who can use it best? Hang out and help out. Clearly my primary concerns are those that can be easily localized. YMMV. Just avoid lazy semantics.

That's not the issue. I've helped out at enough shelters to know: money freely given is the most useful contribution. Of course you want to know your donations help. EA is at best minmaxing the biggest bang for your buck and at worst ignoring today's hungry while claiming tomorrow will be better.

I don't justify much of anything. I'm not trying to get to heaven or make a perfectly balanced investment spreadsheet. I support the hungry by sharing my food. I support art by buying art when I can. I support criminalized populations by emphasizing the service in an otherwise menial service job.

The semantic dissonance of “effective altruism” rubbed me wrong from the first time I came across the phrase (a book cover on a display island at Whole Foods, which sure sets the tone). If you add “effective” you make goodwill transactional, which sure as heck ain’t altruistic.

#OneThingIveLearned: Before I invest time / energy in an app, I've learned to always check under the hood first. Who is behind the app? Do they have a biz plan or sustainability plan? User docs? etc.
onething.pckt.blog
Before I invest time in learning a new app, I look under the hood
I used to be much more spontaneous in jumping into new apps because they just looked too cool or useful or amazing. Now I tend to be more cautious and try to look under the hood first. Why? Because I've been burned way too often, spending a lot of energy and time learning how to use an app and integrate it into my life....only to have the developer abandon it after just a short time, find out that it doesn't live up to the shiny window dressing, find out that the company is just luring in as man...

Whenever a beloved celebrity dies, I check to make sure they weren’t transphobic. Gloria Steinem went from Transsexual Empire-inspired transphobia in the 70s to full support in later life. Heroes change their opinions when they realize they’re wrong. www.transgendermap.com/issues/topic...
Anti-trans views and reconsideration
In February 1977, amid increasing anti-trans sentiment surrounding transgender athletes in general and Renée Richards in particular, Steinem published an anti-trans article titled
"If the Shoe Doesn't Fit, Change the Foot." Steinem claimed "transsexuals are paying an extreme tribute to the power of sex roles. In order to set their real human personalities free, they surgically mutilate their own bodies..." Steinem also embraced the conspiracy theory of "the transsexual empire" promoted by Janice Raymond.
In 2013, Steinem addressed z "words circulated out of time and context" from those previous writings:
So now / want to be unequivocal in my words: / believe that transgender people, including those who have transitioned, are living out real, authentic lives. Those lives should be celebrated, not questioned. Their health care decisions should be theirs and theirs alone to make. And what / wrote decades ago does not reflect what we know today as we move away from only the binary boxes of "masculine" or "feminine" and begin to live along the full human continuum of identity and expression.
In 2021, Steinem signed an open letter supporting trans women and girls, saying, "I am proud to sign this letter because we all must fight against the unnecessary barriers placed on trans women and girls by lawmakers and those who co-opt the feminist label in the name of division and hatred."

Published in the Boston Globe a few weeks before ChatGPT was released in 2022.
I tell my students that writing — in the classroom, in your journal, in a memo at work — is a way of bringing order to our thinking or of breaking apart that order as we challenge our ideas. We look at the evidence around us. We consider ideas we disagree with. And we try to bring a shape to it all. Sometimes my students see the process differently. They see writing a paper as a hoop they are being asked to jump through, a way for me to evaluate them and pronounce them successful or not. In other words, they see writing solely as a product. If the end point rather than the process were indeed all that mattered, then there might be good reason to turn to GPT-3. But if, as I believe is the case, we write to make sense of the world, then the risks of turning that process over to AI are much greater.

Today’s #Yardbug nearly gave me a heart attack when she unexpectedly landed beside me on the deck - but she’s just a moth. An enormous, terrifying, harmless moth.
She was longer than my thumb, I shit thee not. This is an American hornet moth, a mimic that can be a problem when its a larval thing - as the caterpillars bore into some native trees, and a bad one infestation can kill one - but this is the only one I’ve ever seen in my yard, and I think she’s magnificent. She was very chill, so I got a little closer for this pic. I love her fuzzy little body, which you can’t see without a macro. An excellent job of mimicry indeed!Same creature from underneath - she looks like an enormous black and white hornet, but as you can see from this angle, she has no actual stinger.

Discworld QOTD, from Jingo
The crowd looked at the last melon. They were street people. They knew the score. When the object can be under one of three things, and it’s already turned out not to be under two of them, then the one place it was certainly not going to be was under the third. Only some kind of gullible fool would believe something like that. Of course there was going to be a trick. There always was a trick. But you watched it, in order to see a trick done well.
Lord Vetinari raised the melon nevertheless, and the crowd nodded in satisfaction. Of course it wasn’t there. It’d be a pretty poor day for street entertainment if things were where they were supposed to be.
