Many of my pals ask me why I'm a lifelong Labour supporter after I disliked leaders for being "too right wing" my whole life. Then when Corbyn was elected I disliked him more than any Labour leader before or since! I feel it's my right, nay obligation, as a paying member to harsh on leadership.

For example, just in story terms do you think that there is anything in post 1997 mainline films that tells as good and interesting story as Knights of the old Republic did? I don't. It was the use of that blank canvas that gave them the freedom to craft a great story that felt like Star Wars.

Yeah, far too much attempting to shoe horn Nostalgia into the reboot trilogy. For me the best bit was in Last Jedi where they were hinting that anyone could be a Jedi. It's a blank canvass, doesn't have to be Skywalkers, and Palpatines. Use that amazing canvas for something new

"A long time ago in a galaxy far away".... In a world with Spaceship and space wizards. Ought to be an amazing blank canvass on which you can tell amazing stories. Honestly set next film 1000 years after Yavin that is basically a myth to the protagonists now

Also, like I know race relations have never been perfect. But until the last few years they'd been noticeably, and visibly improving in the UK for decades. Even if you fear this is built on sand, like we know that public opinion can move on this like a lot, quickly and for the better.

Not been to Auschwitz but I visited Oradour a couple of years ago and thought the same. I walked around in shocked silence; felt pretty overcome by it all and there was so much just common or garden tourism happening. Was astonishing.

Lots of talk of growth ahead of the Budget, as if it were a baroque puzzle. Our problem is basic. It's that we no longer support the things which facilitate growth: Europe, immigration, higher education, tax simplification, policy stability. These are all choices and could stop making them anytime.

I mean I can see how a changed Tory Party could make this happen; but I'm not sure it's that likely? They just aren't really doing anything, that I can see, to even try to appeal to those who just stayed home in 2024.

Of course since then a load of them have either dabbled with Reform/Restore if that way inclined in politics; or if swinging the other way in the Tory vote being systematically sidelined and ridiculed by the Tory Leader.

I’ve worn a grubby RNLI cap for decades. I sound London, but I was born in Truro and I was a basically feral (Gen X) kid wandering the coast path with a dog until sunset for a lot of my early life. The lifeboats are in the fabric like trawlers and farms and pasties and fish and chips.

I think the worst part of Labour's response to the fascist mobilisation is Andy Burnham's absence. He's the most popular politician in the country, with social media reach and actual powers of persuasion, and he's saying nothing in public. He can actually be of use here but he's choosing not to

I simply do not understand what's going on in Labour that renders its leaders incapable of finding a TV camera and speaking out against street violence. Even if you assume they agree about immigration, violence is wrong, unpopular AND against the interests of any even vaguely left wing govt.

Damning silence from Labour on their Napoleon III exhumation policy
Tom Harwood tweets:

BREAK: Nigel Farage says under a Reform government the body of Napoleon III could be returned from England to France.
The last French emperor's final resting place is in The Imperial Crypt at St Michael's Abbey in Farnborough.
He died in exile in England in 1873 following the fall of the Second Empire. His body was never returned to France because they didn't want it, and due to his wife's wishes. She was later buried alongside him.

So, if I understand Nigel Farage's argument correctly it is: "Everyone I trusted and elevated into a position of responsibility is constantly doing crimes that benefit me but of which I somehow have no knowledge. I am a man with the character, judgement, and intelligence to run the country." Ok.

Old Twitter was never in fact the "Public Square" of some people's imaginations. But even if it was (and Bluesky somehow inherited that), I don't actually have to speak to, or interact with, anyone I don't want to in a public square. So why should I have to in a virtual one?

The best time for broad based tax rises was autumn 2024. The next best time was autumn 2025. But here we are. The next best time is this budget. The point of political capital is to spend it when you need to. Take the hit now and give yourself a path to a strong political argument in 2028/29.
