Some of the awesome ancient Yew Taxus baccata trees at Kingley Vale NNR. Impossible to age but a millennium seems possible. Far from the dark and poisoned habitat I imagined - light open woodland reminiscent of both Caledonian Pinewood and Australian eucalypt groves

Seeking reports of healthy ash growing alongside those with dieback. That way we'll know they have been exposed to the disease and are resistant. Individuals like that can be used to breed resilient future planting stock. Full details 👉 buff.ly/06XgqNm @thebotanics.bsky.social @theicf.bsky.social

Tree Seed Collection volunteers had a great day at #GlenFinglas, coming away with a 2.5kg haul of silver birch seed. There was a birch pollen surge across Scotland back in Spring. A bumper harvest of seeds was expected to follow, and it has! 🧵 1/2

Our Tree Warden Scheme Volunteer Engagement Officer, Charlie, discovered a hawthorn that has been cut and laid into a hedge, likely many years ago. It has since fallen out of management and has regrown its crown from the horizontally laid stems, which are now forming low branches.

Voted for UK 2026 #TreeOfTheYear yet? This year we're celebrating trees who have survived #AgainstTheOdds💪. Two are in Scotland: 🌳 Earlston Lightening Oak - Dumfries & Galloway 🌳 Balloch Castle Ash - West Dunbartonshire But there are 8 other UK beauties to choose from too! Vote 👉️ buff.ly/aAjTq6p
Veteran ash tree with immense gnarled roots dominating the foreground, its leafy branches framing Balloch Castle across a sunlit, manicured lawn in Balloch Country Park, West Dunbartonshire.Earlstoun Lightning Oak in Dumfries and Galloway, leaning with a visible lightning scar where a limb was lost, standing resiliently beside a stone farmhouse with rolling hills and a cloudy sky behind.Solitary oak standing on a grassy mid-Wales hillside under a clear sky, titled "Wales Coast Path Oak," evoking shelter and resilience for lone walkers in Ceredigion.Ancient Crowhurst Yew in Surrey, its massive hollow trunk with a small wooden door and sprawling, sunlit branches conveying centuries of history, resilience after cannon fire, and use as a meeting place.

🌳 Thick and Thicker Trunk Tuesday 😆 Beech trees are a recognised & visible boundary marker in many parts of Scotland, particularly in the #ScottishBorders where they form hedgerows or lines along fields, dykes & park edges. These 3 were recorded nr Ancrum. #ThickTrunkTuesday #HeritageTrees
Three mature beech trees stand in a row along a raised parkland boundary. There is a bench in front of them. The tree nearest the viewer is particularly 'fat' - all show hollowing and signs of ageing but their canopies are full of bright green leaves. Credit WTML.

Knots (also known as branch unions) occur where the stem (post) has decayed, leaving only the branch attachments. You can also see annual stem and branch growth within the knots. Spotted by our Technical Knowledge & Data Senior Manager, Ian.

Great to see one of Scotland’s smallest yet most significant native trees growing in our #GleannShìldeag #TreeNursery last week. Dwarf birch (Betula nana) survives in only a few fragmented populations, but is vital for montane biodiversity. We'll plant these out next year. #MontaneWoodland
