Today's #FungiFriday feature is the shaggy parasol spotted by our National Tree Warden Scheme Coordinator, Sam. Shaggy parasols often grow in "fairy rings" and, in European folklore, these mysterious circles were said to be where fairies, pixies and elves danced.

Happy Seed Gathering Season! As the nights start to draw in, it’s tempting to hunker inside – but this is the best time of year to explore your local woods or nearest park and gather the seeds, nuts and fruits that will grow to become the next generation of life-giving trees, shrubs and hedgerows.

Where have all the acorns gone? Following a bumper mast year, it's normal for oak trees to produce far fewer acorns for a while. Have you spotted a shortage in your area? Let us know below.

Our Tree Warden Scheme Volunteer Engagement Officer, Charlie, discovered a hawthorn that has been cut and laid into a hedge, likely many years ago. It has since fallen out of management and has regrown its crown from the horizontally laid stems, which are now forming low branches.

Orchards have been used to grow food for thousands of years! They were brought over by the Romans, with the most common species in the UK being apple cultivars. Not only are orchards useful to us, but to wildlife too. They are a brilliant source of food for our pollinators! 💚🍏 (c) Kayleigh Wright

Cities, with their many tarmac roads and tightly packed, high-rise buildings, can create ‘heat islands’, areas where heat accumulates and the temperatures rise. Trees can throw shade onto streets and pavements, reducing the ‘heat island’ impact.

Mulch is a simple way to help protect the tree’s roots from extreme temperatures and keep the ground moist and cool. It means you can avoid using chemicals on any weeds and there’s no need to use a lawn mower or strimmer near the tree, which can risk damaging the bark. 🌳
