Been thinking about when my 100+ law school crim class covered sex crimes and dozens of men spent the hour arguing with the professor bc they believed the US code definition of rape was unfair. That day, the handful of women in the class realized just how many of our classmates had raped someone.

A million other factors involved, but this is also why language is so important. It’s not a coincidence that the relaxing of norms around slurs and dehumanizing language accelerated right before this string of lynchings. It’s not about hurt feelings, it’s about peoples’ very humanity.

Soviet Union: Joseph Stalin
