Finished The Blood of Dawnwalker. I think I was originally expecting something like The Witcher, which as a narrative always felt broadly pessimistic. And while I wouldn't say Dawnwalker is, on the whole, an optimistic narrative... It's bittersweet in a way I've rarely seen games be. Oddly gentle.

My partner is out of the country until at least November, and I’m really wishing I’d gone with her because, holy shit, her brother is useless and she’s had to do EVERYTHING logistical around settling her dad’s estate and taking care of her mom’s health. I could have at least done SOMETHING.

Since implementing AI, every single release my employer has put out has had last-minute delays due to unexpected functional issues. Every doc editor’s time-to-edit per page has exploded. Because genAI is absolute flim-flam, as sold. It’s presented as a shortcut, but it fails at that fundamentally.

I watched a video today on spotted hyenas, and it pointed out that the females’ pseudopenis is likely not itself an advantage, but a side effect of a different adaptation strong enough to overcome the detriments presented by the pseudopenis (high mortality for both mother and baby).

One other really neat thing the game does is mid-boss dialogue. This is often used to give you a bit of feedback on how to handle specific types of attacks, but you usually have other options, and there’s on particular instance where it purposely misleads you.

In the main city of The Blood of Dawnwalker, Svartrau, there’s a Jewish section (Neustadt). If you walk around here, you can hear NPCs debating whether the Tanakh contains references to vampires. Given the vampire bad guys in the game have outlawed religions besides their own, this is pretty cool.

These things are fundamentally not “super polished.” One of the major issues with AI-based development is the validation bottleneck, because if you produce more code, that’s more code that has to be reviewed before publication. That’s the definition of “polish.” That gets offloaded to AI.

Thinking a lot today about a video of ChatGPT 5.6 trying to beat a chess grandmaster, except each time it lost it got to replace one of its pawns with a Queen in the next game. The GM played black until every pawn was a Queen (at this point, there’s a forced mate in 1 for white).

One of my writers, I’m pretty sure, is responsible for about 90% of my mental exhaustion. I have spent literal days trying to edit a set of six very similar pages from them that, frankly, should have taken at most a few hours. I don’t skip cinematics, but I play with subtitles. Often, I’ll have read the subtitle before the actor has finished delivering the line, and having the option to push them forward to the next one helps me follow the story. In doing it in The Blood of Dawnwalker.
