Idk, this week has been fucking brutal for me. I feel on fire and all this anger is pouring out in a million different directions. Women deserve better. We deserve a space at the table and to feel safe at it. We deserve the same opportunities these pieces of shit regularly get. We deserve it all.

It’s a mark of the corruption of our whole way of thinking about the world that trying to meet a planetary emergency is routinely described as “ideological”, while continuing to accelerate it is presented as “pragmatic” and “economic”.

The Fairford incident is dominating the news cycle - and the right-wing. Over the past 48 hours we’ve seen speculation, insinuation and implication attempt turn a serious story about security into one about immigration. This is a long one. Make some tea.

The problem isn't rogue #AI models, it's *negligent companies*. If a biomedical firm put their product in public water supply because they wanted to test it 'in the real world', they'd be treated as criminal at corporate & individual level. www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

I did a somewhat deep dive into the recent OpenAI and Anthropic "hacks" for an upcoming interview. IMO, the AI companies are better off running with the "rogue AI" story because the real story is actually pretty embarrassing. Like making your Wi-Fi password "wifi" embarrassing. 🧵

I think the ultimate test of this is actually Boris Johnson. Boris *was fired from his first job* for making up stories, only to go on to be hired into a prestigious role at the Telegraph and spend years lying about the EU at Brussels. And I mean literally lying here; not bad punditry.

There are senior figures in British media and politics - quite high in politics, in fact, to put it mildly - who are known, by the same hacks who hounded Jason Arday to his death, to have done things much much worse than what he did. The hacks protect those people.

A phenomenon I've noticed recently is people trying to occupy some untenable middleground wrt to the use of systems sold as "AI" -- this is a position where people try to recognize the harms of this tech but also hold space for "responsible" or "ethical" use. 🧵>>

It didn't "go rogue". It did what it was instructed to do. In a sophisticated way but nonetheless we have to stop assigning human agency to AI systems. Everything that happened here was as a result of human designed and instructed systems.

If you don't want all the big money in publishing to go to celebs, talk about books you love. Write about them. Borrow books that excite you from the library. Read reviews. Listen to podcasts about books. Go to book events if you can afford it. Celebs get book deals because people talk about them.

It is extremely important that Labour understands that the movement of voters between Lab and Ref was not the crucial factor, it was consolidation of the anti-Ref vote and Lab voters turning out in droves. Otherwise Burnham will make the same mistakes as Starmer in targeting only one set of voters.

Now we're talking. Prospect - the union for specialist civil servants including some in comms - has just called on the Government to stop using X after its use to help coordinate far right riots in the UK:
Mike Clancy, General Secretary of Prospect, said:

“The attempted murder in Belfast yesterday was horrific and we want to express solidarity with the victim and his family.

“But the indiscriminate targeting of migrant families we have seen in response is totally unacceptable and shames our country. We must all stand in solidarity with those affected by this racist violence.

“We must also be clear about what is driving this behaviour. Elon Musk continues to use his X platform to promote far-right content and interfere in the politics of the UK. It is increasingly clear that X is not a social media app but a far right organising tool with Musk himself actively supporting and promoting people who are calling for violence and far right policies.

“Government use of X legitimises it as a platform, and also results in civil service communications officers having to wade through racist content while doing their jobs. We need to stand up to racism and the far right - that has to start with creating spaces for dialogue that aren't poisoned by racism. We call on the Government to abandon its use of X and use the expertise of specialist civil servants to develop alternative approaches to communications.”

I do not fully trust critics who are not both lovers and haters. All I want is for you to have some kind of taste, some kind of ethic, and I want you to argue in favor of it, which should inevitably mean that you greatly admire some works in your chosen field and definitely don’t admire others.

The government continuing to post on X gives the media all they need to justify continuing to use X posts in news broadcasts. X becomes agenda-setting in the way front pages did even when most people stopped reading newspapers.

Condemning riots isn't enough. We need policy action, including an immediate appraisal of X as a vehicle for coordinating far-right disorder. And we need political leadership, to challenge white nationalism as an idea, not to validate it daily and then complain when it turns violent.
