One thing I’m slowly learning about trauma recovery is that it’s about regaining the ability to experience an intense emotion without immediately going into a trauma survival response (dissociating, fawning, etc.). This is hard! And it only seems to happen through feeling

Even though I can be scared, I'm proud to be transgender. I'm proud to have defined who I am and declared that to the world. I'm proud to have looked those fears in the eye, set them down beside me, and chosen to be true to myself. Transition has given me a chance to truly live.

Once upon a time, the ever-evolving graffiti on this reservoir near the psych unit was a cave-painting-record. I photographed much of it over months. One day they painted it grey. The next day:

bc there's something deeply primal about that that can be profound and resonant. But conversion is real, and for some people "home" is not where they grew up but rather someplace else (just like for some people, "home" is not the gender assigned at birth.) I can't answer that for anyone.
