Something I’ve had a lot of time to think about I was a very feminine little boy and had quite a masculine mother. There was something really special about that relationship, for many reasons. Some of that was because of the contrast, but also the opportunities she had.

I’ve always been puzzled by this “difficulty attaching to the father” belief. Yeah, anecdote, but I was very attached to my dad—to both parents! This speaks to the misogynistic character of anti-effeminacy—here not just misogyny against the boy, but also against his mother.

Traditionally, one would be led toward the presumption that boyhood femininity is deadly because it represents a defense against separation from the mother, and anxiety about assuming a boy's proper place alongside his father within the symbolic order. I do not necessarily disagree with these traditional descriptions at least as they configure a feminine boy in relation to the prevailing symbolic. I do think feminine boys experience difficulty in separating from their mothers and attaching to their fathers. I do not, however, agree with the presumption that this mother-son father-son configuration is necessarily pathological, or that these marginal boys are on the margin only as the consequence of trauma or relational insufficiency.

This makes me feel physically sick. The pathologization and persecution of feminine boys often feels more nauseating and violating to me than even some naked transphobia. Something about hitting you at your youngest places. Feminine boys get treated so badly and almost no one talks about it.

Because extreme boyhood femininity
is often a precursor of adult transsexualism, transvestism, and homosexuality, the author recommends early intervention for
boys who meet specific behavioral
criteria of gender disturbance. It is
necessary to involve the parents in such treatment and to deal with the
resistances they may have to
recognizing and working on the problem as well as problems within the marital relationship that may affect the child's behavior. These
boys are remarkably responsive to treatment given between the ages of 5 and 12, becoming more masculine in behavior and more comfortable
with their identity as males.

Because puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones have been used in the past to chemically castrate gay people—and are still used to chemically castrate sex offenders—some see these interventions as a continuation of that abuse: chemical castration of kids who would grow up to be gay. To these gay adults, many of whom were gender nonconforming children, telling feminine boys and masculine girls that they don’t belong in their biological category, that they can or should be the opposite (or neither) sex is both deeply sexist and a form of conversion therapy. It’s changing nonconforming kids into conforming kids, they say, and changing gay kids into straight kids.
