Probably no one else cares, but the opening scene of "Waitress" where Sara Bareilles is singing "flour, sugar, butter" and stirring those ingredients repeatedly in a bowl with a spoon bears no resemblance to the actual making of pie crust.

Handwavily almost every classic book written by a man between 1930 and 1970. Truly a bleak era.

WTF are multiple paragraphs about this guy's academic achievements doing in the middle of this article? How is this remotely relevant? Creeps and rapists rob women of their personhood, and are then treated to little essays about their "redeeming" qualities. In the media, in courtrooms. No.

Also serious pie baker: raspberry-rhubarb, blueberry-nectarine, key lime made with coconut milk and coconut meringue, and chocolate bourbon pecan. Can't have Thanksgiving without pumpkin pie and apple pie though. Tarte tatin.

Writing isn't thought transcription. If you think AI is writing *for* you, it isn't. Writing is a challenge to thought. Putting something into words is a process that enforces reflection and the scrutiny of ideas. Except the self-assessment for your performance review. Have at it, Chat-GPT.

I refuse to blame penguins for anything other than gobbling up sardine populations and shoving each other over edges. (Seriously though ticks on penguins? Sounds fictional.)

Very um specific community college class. I wonder how many people will enroll. I guess it's Portland after all.
A listing for a community education class called Realistic Prop Food: Haunted Charcuterie. It teaches sculpting and painting techniques for making moldy and spoiled meat, cheese, crackers, and pickles.

I'm definitely a do not finish person (there are many books, life is short) but the real point to be made is that if you didn't finish a sizeable chunk of the book, don't show up to book club. Unless it's really a wine club. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/09/b...

Should You Be Ashamed to Put Down a Book You Don’t Enjoy? (Gift Article)
Is it shameful, or sensible, to put down a book you don’t enjoy? Three little letters, and social media, have turbocharged a longstanding debate.

Huh, women have been expected to "gravitate" towards books about men's concerns (presumed to be "stuff men do") for at least a century but that's about half the history of the novel. The big male and female novelists of the 19th century wrote about men AND women's novels often outsold men's.

I don't remember this being an issue but for a while my then-five-year-old daughter was inconsolable about the heat death of the universe. I'm not sure how she heard about it. Some sadistic children's book?

I keep paperbacks of Ursula Le Guin's The Dispossessed and The Lathe of Heaven around so I can hand them out to people. Also Charlotte Yonge novels if I can find them. I think only two have been printed (by Virago) in the last century. And I've bought multiple translations of Kristin Lavransdatter.

The original headline makes it sound like "the tourist" and "the man" are two different people, leaving one to conclude that the bison yeeted the tourist, who then landed on an unrelated third party who sustained injuries as a result.

Melancholy, by Lucas Cranach the Elder.
A woman with a low-necked Renaissance dress and wings, who is seated and holding a stick, is looking into the middle distance while three naked babies play some kind of stick and hoop game with a very big ball that appears to be covered with human skin. In the background a small white dog is napping on a wide windowsill, and a coven of witches in a cloud are riding various menacing animals such as a boar and a goat.

People who enjoy old novels should read The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner (1824) by James Hogg, about a Calvinist so assured of his own salvation he becomes a murderer on the strength of it. It's gripping, Gothic, and also utterly savage on this subject.

Jellyfish viewing therapy. Dark room, walls lined with lit-up tanks of gently pulsating moon jellies (overhead would be nice), soft cushions, your choice of music--Russian choral music maybe, or Debussy's Images for piano--or utter silence. $200 an hour.

This article couldn't be less clear if it tried. What does the scam look like? What does the legit update look like? What should ordinary people do? And that's the *correction* at the very top.
A Yahoo! Tech article has the following baffling correction:
Update April 16: Following confirmation of a highly dangerous fake Windows Update that users have been warned not to download, this article has been revised to include: information regarding the second-largest Patch Tuesday security vulnerability update ever, which Microsoft users really must install to ensure their Windows systems are properly protected against attack, along with details of an April Windows Server security update that some users are finding they cannot install even though they want to. Don’t be confused. Be informed and stay safe.

I'm old enough that my mother would have needed a man's signoff to get credit or a car, but I didn't know about that till I read about it in some popular history much later. I did know that in the early 70s it was fine to refuse to rent to a divorced woman with kids, because that happened to her.

And if it weren't, WHO CARES? Presume competence and champion meaningful participation for people of any "intelligence." 50% of people are below average and society should not be set up to punish people who are perceived as less than. The search to disqualify whole groups of people is immoral.

It's surprisingly hard to think of truly frivolous things to do with that much money. All my dumb high-culture commitments probably benefit someone, somewhere. Anyway, build hundreds of libraries and bridges etc with the kind of ornate work people used to do when artisan labor was cheap enough.
